I've had two HC's one i got from the scrapyard when i was 17 it only needed welding to the rear suspension turrets and it was back on the road. The other one i had was a 34'000 mile from new which i sold a while back now . great cars love em .

I had a 1975 Viva when I passed my test in '82. That brought back memories of hitting the starter motor in a morning!...Great video, thanks for sharing.

Vital jobs on a hc viva. Low tension lead points to coil. Even if it looks ok, change it or make one up, easy!. Crankcase vent hose on top of rocker cover. If the slightest bit soft, Chuck it. If you can’t get one take it to a Ford factors and they have a couple of hoses in the escort range, older, that should nearly match but will do the job. Change the ring gear or the whole assembly and rebuild starter motor. Make a four inch square steel plate with two tings at the bottom to locate in the water pump two top bolts. Stops mayonnaise in rocker cover by diverting cold air around it. I used to sell the parts in the seventies and knew these things inside out.

Can't believe it was a year since I 😢 last saw your video, I came from a family of Viva owners. I believe there was ( 5 ) over 52 years, plus a Magnum, & Chevette estate. That ignition / steering lock 🔐 could be obtained as an aftermarket kitset. I think it was an AC Delco from a blue & white box 📦. When your cleaning those spark plugs, those stromberg carbs brought back memories, btw one of my parents worked for a Vauxhall franchise in New Zealand 🇳🇿 1974-1981, the following of Vauxhall continued both before, & after for years. New Zealand 🇳🇿 models were closer to UK 🇬🇧 models than the ones in Canada 🇨🇦, South Africa 🇿🇦 and those sold in South America 🇺🇸. Look forward to the balance of your video 📹 and subsequent video. Choice music 🎶 keep it coming. Sounds like your working under a Gatwick flightpath, last in beautiful UK 🇬🇧 27 years ago, congrats 👏 of the Queens 70th on the throne.

There use to be an earthstrap from engine block near oil filter to LH chassis side rail, never got to see whether this was connected ! The engine will not start if this braided wire is disconnected.

If you want to save the heater, undo the top hose joint with heater hose & funnel fill the top heater hose with water, otherwise you'll fry your heater without water in it. Happy HC driving.😎👍👌

this is what i had to go through every morning just to get the bastard to start. I used to carry a hammer and length of wood around with me to hit the starter motor when it either jammed or when the flywheel happened to stop at a point where it was missing a tooth on the ring gear (and there were many).

Thank you for your comment. yes, the starter just needs a clean and oiling. I just wanted the car running to get it to take a short drive, The car lives on, its a new start to a new journey. I have another video coming up with Hillman avenger

Best fitting an engine cut out switch or two disguised or concealed with these old cars without immobilisers i had a montego and the rear wash wiper switch was actually the engine cut out switch so that's why nobody ever got it 😀🤸😂🤸😂🤸😂

Were these two called Frank and Jesse James or some other cowboys? Driving on the footpath, No tax, insurance, mot and yet drives it up the road, doesn't even know if the brakes work. Jesse was standing in front of it while Frank was trying to get it in gear, if it had lept forward it would have crushed his legs. You could tell they were from up north.

I think I would have taken the all spark plugs out and spun it over before anything else. It would have freed up the engine and let the starter burn off all the oxidation on the commutator so it would start to spin faster. Also would build up a bit of oil pressure before firing it up. I think it’s firing on 3 cylinders now though ?. Those old viva engines did suffer from loss of compression on one cylinder making them a bit lumpy. If the starter is a pre-engaged type, it’ll need to come out and be restored. Sounds like it might be the old pinion one though, so easier to restore those...Good luck with the whole restoration!

@@Wiltshire-observer hi ian your right those engine did suffer from low compression only really good for 50,00 miles I would say the starter motor is the old type I know that sound very my dad once owned once I think the pre engaged are much better up to date the guy was selling it on eBay nice on ian

@@davidswift2542 Yup ! - I worked on the same age of Viva as a student when I was 18....so you can guess my age now !. We changed out the engine for a factory replacement found at a scrappy at the time. It had higher compression to start with. Also another student mate had a Viva same age, that did well for about two years on a 100 mile daily commute, then it suddenly died overnight ! - compression again. If you restore the car it will last many years I’m sure driven just on summer days. Worth a restore to save it now, very few about.

Solenoid sounds faulty, I used to clean bendix with brake cleaner. I used to spray branded earth's and grease them. Clutch plate used to stick to fly wheel also. I use to start it and press clutch in and out.sounds good no knocks or rattles.
