It has been almost a year since I came across this 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 and I have been doing upgrades on it ever since. This was the first time I was able to actually take it out for a real test drive to see if everything was good to go. A week before, we had the engine nearly torn apart looking for a mysterious oil leak...they say three times is a charm, it took that many attempts to finally sort it out. Well, at least now we have a new rear main seal, crankcase, valve cover and oil pan gasket, new O-ring for the diesel injector pump...etc.
The route we took being about 115 kilometers each way from the city to the beach and a couple laps around town was enough to let me know that this one family owned, nearly 50 year old classic 4X4 was road worthy. Of course, a few details still needed to be worked out but that is to be expected after such a lengthy process. The original B diesel 4 cylinder had been rebuilt or overhauled before I acquired this TLC and although under powered for today's modern vehicles, it performed exceptionally well, and with it's low horse power to high torque ratio, I'm still rolling around with a full tank of fuel. BTW...these engines are legendary for their reliability and ease of maintenance.
I will post a video of the process we went though this past year and some of the comfort upgrades that went into this wonderful piece of automotive history.
For the record, eyes were on the road at all times while recording and yes, the engine info plates are not in the correct factory position due to the areas not being accessible from added parts.
