Spent 10+ years on one of these, in 6 different countries. Best time of my life! Great machines. Even cleared minefields with them. I should write a thank you to Cat.

I got to operate a brand new D-8K during the summer of 1975. I had previously been on a 46-A D-8H with a cable blade. The 8-K was a Cadillac compared to the old 46-A, but without a cab, it was still freezing cold in the winter time. I got fed up with freezing my a$$ off in the winter and moved to driving an 18 wheeler for the next 30 years. Would love to get back on a dozer for a few days just to bring back the memories......but not in the winter time!

I just can’t stress enough how good these old 8k’s were!!...super tough and super reliable and if they still made them today and they were properly maintained especially with the better lubricants we have these days, I’m sure that old D342 would never wear out!!..I had a buddy who did a big earthmoving job on a secluded island in British Columbia, Canada and everything had to be barged in and they needed a big dozer to move material so they bought a brand new D8T because they were under very tight environmental time restrictions and they needed something “reliable” to get the job done...so when it arrived on the barge, they went to go start it up and it wouldn’t move...bad sensor and some other issues...they waited days for the part and held up the barge so when the cat mechanic showed up, he got it fixed and took it off the barge and he told him to tell his boss to bring him an 8k like yesterday!!!!...a few days later they showed with a good old D8k in really good shape and they ran those two dozers for three months straight pushing down the mountain and the 8T was down most of those three months and the old 8k never saw a wrench!!!..they got the job done and on time because of that old tractor!..they were a gem for sure and the only other tractor I could say was even the slightest bit better was the D9H...couldn’t kill them!..you have a masterpiece there my friend!..cheers!!🍻

Truth be told all of the old dozers ran hot at times because the rads would get plugged from debris and they all slobbered a little bit so they would get oil residue on the fins and plug up...keep in mind too that regular maintenance wasn’t like it is today and the new machines have the reversing fans in them too so over heating isn’t as big a problem as it was 40+ years ago...I ran an old 8k for a summer pushing scrapers and what ever else that needed moving and it was hot as frigg that summer and she never even came close to overheating!...it ran flawless the whole summer and we had 7R’s and 6R’s and John Deere’s shitting the bed all over the place and that old open cab 8k kept chuggin day in and day out!!

@letsdig18 you should consider tradeing your D6 for that D8 and pay the change - the D6 still struggles with some stumps and trees , D8 steamrolls entire forrests even trees with deep taproots - also more use on large projects + a ripper for the really extraordinarily big stumps (or perhaps a tile plow)

I ran one of these in the US Army Reserves and the only thing different about was ours were painted green and ours had mufflers. They did a fine job pushing scrapers and really enjoyed pushing a full blade on curves using just the steering clutches without having to use the steering brakes

These come with one big problem. I bought a 7G military cat. We started blowing hoses, had to change everything made of rubber because they've sat for 40 years. Then we lost sleeve o rings got water in oil and lost the crank. When we tore engine down all the rubbers were cracked. We bought a new engine and now we love our low hour tractor. I think we have about 3000 hours on it.
