The Amal concentric carb was built down to a price not up to a standard. The new premier versions address some issues, however to illustrate the point, Brian Pollitt fitted SU carbs to his two R3’s, mated to inlet manifolds cast by a friend of John Moss Robinson. The bikes were more frugal yet more powerful than with the Amal’s. Fabulous bike btw, my favourite Trident. Absolutely beautiful sound ❤️

Hey Honda NC750X. Certainly you are entitled to your opinion, but if you’ve ever had a relationship with a British Motorcycle you’d know that there is a part of every workers soul that is embedded in that machine. You experience it every time you work on, or operate those mechanical marvels. Have had many Japanese Bikes and I never have that thrill. God bless and happy thanksgiving.

Well up on my workshop stand I cant see much difference between my two tridents or K2 CB750. Both fiddly old tech...50 odd year old bikes that both need plenty of fettling to keep going well. The Trident is infinitely easier to get parts for. These days, with bikes being so pampered and seldom ridden, there isn't a lot between them in terms of ownership experience. Just my opinion. On the road, again, bugger all between them. 60 odd Hp, which is enough to make them both great fun. These days, I feel that the SOHC CB750 is slightly over rated, and Tridents slightly under rated but surprisingly similar on the road.

Back in the 1980s I was a mechanic at a Norton, Triumph & BMW dealer. I did a lot of British bike work and I did an amazing amount of work on Triumph T150s and T160s. My honest assessment is that they were built poorly from what was often sub-standard parts and castings. When built right, with care and attention to detail, they are and were wonderful bikes. For those of you that have never experienced a Triumph (or BSA) triple you are missing a real treat. The engine is smooth and pulls hard from just off idle. It has a throaty growl like nothing else. The bike is heavy and kind of a hand full in a parking lot but pure joy out on a twisty road. The T160 has the bigger tank which is what you want because the three cylinder is rather thirsty. The seat, on a T160, is washboard hard.

Mike, I have probably watched every video you posted so far, but as the owner of a 100% original 2,400 mile T160, this video got my attention immediately. What a beautiful motorcycle. Original Cherokee Red paint on a Trident is very, very rare. They faded to purple/pink after just a few years of exposure to UV. That is the optional big tank BTW, which originally came with a vinyl white stripe down the center. These bikes are thirsty so the optional tank was a wise choice. More videos of this bike please!!!
@TheMightyGarage

Wow, many thanks for your great comment and note about the tank. I didn't realize it was an optional tank. I'm hoping to see more of this bike when the weather improves and also get a few more triples together. There aren't too many in the area. Geoff and I counted perhaps a dozen, so it would be wonderful to have a "triples day" event in the new year. Best wishes, Mike

Back in '75, here in the UK, mine had the wide tank as standard - and you needed it! If I plodded around steadily it would return about 35 miles per UK gallon, but if I absolutely wrung it's neck it would do about 33 mpg. So it was a case of no contest, why spoil the fun for a measly 2 mpg. 😆 That sound took me right back to the seventies, it sounds beautiful and even on all 3 cylinders.😍

After an eye watering priced re-build I was advised by the very experienced technician that the camshafts suffer if the bike is run at idle for too long when cold. The advice was start the bike and immediately ride it at moderate power & RPM settings until warm, I would guess this is to get the crankshaft spinning and distributing oil around the crankcases and cams………..I hope you guys enjoy your T160 as much as I enjoy mine.

Comparison is the root of all evil, and advised against in the Old Testament. However, I think comparisons of the Trident should be with other 3-cyl bikes. Yamaha XS 750 for example. I only had the opportunity to try out an -84 XS 850, and found it having a great sound, but being lumpy, top heavy, unbalanced and not a pleasant ride.

Hello Mike and greetings again from Calderdale, in the early 1980's I owned a 1977 registered T160V with a Norman Hyde 871cc big bore kit, Boyer Bransden electronic ignition and a pair of up swept tulip mufflers. It was quite frankly the best handling motorcycle that I've ever owned it went around the Yorkshire Dales narrow twisty roads like it was on rails, yes Tridents are thirsty, I used to get 35 miles from a gallon of 4-star, my previous machine was a 1981 T140E which gave around 52 miles from a gallon of 4-star. With the extra cylinder capacity the Trident was good for around 135 mph, which is about 10 mph up on the stock 740cc capacity. The Triumph and BSA triples do sound wonderful when they are on the boil. The thirstiest machine that I ever owned was a 1980 Laverda 1200, I could only manage to get 27 mpg around town and 30 mpg on motorway runs from that one, I must admit it gave me lots of smiles per mile, I always ended up grinning like a Cheshire cat when I rode the Laverda. It demanded a lot of rider input to get the best from her, the hand controls were heavy and the whole plot was lofty and it carried it's weight high up with the tall sand cast motor which was a work of art. It pulled like a locomotive and the gearing was tall, it would pull to 90 mph (half way into the red zone) in first gear when riding solo, top end was 145 mph. Thanks for sharing the Trident video Mike.
