That car deserves to be restored. I can't believe how little rust it has for a 76. I recall those cars rusting on the dealer lots and required a recall to replace the front fenders. Unique and rare car from the 70's Thanks for doing the video!

The Aspen and Volare replaced the Dart and Valiant. Even Lee Iacocca admitted that Chrysler made a huge mistake when they replaced the Dart and Vsliant with this. He also admitted that Chrysler replaced the Dart and Valiant which ran forever with a car that started to rust the minute it was driven off the new car lot. I remember these when I was a kid. My neighbor had a Dodge van that was in for warranty work, and the dealer gave her one of these as a loaner. During the term of the loaner, the Aspen broke down twice. We all then called the Dodge Aspen the Dodge asshole pen because it was poorly built with reliability issues. This is one of the cars that put The Chrysler Corporation on the brink of bankruptcy. By 1979 Chrysler had to ask for a Government loan guarantee.
@BillLaBrie

No one who knew anything about cars bought these. They were amazingly shitty, to the point where it seemed Chrysler was trying to sabotage itself. Of course, no American cars were that good at the time, but these were a standout. Even a Nova or Maverick got more respect. That being said, this car is a relatively interesting example that probably should be restored and preserved.

WooHoo! A Mopar F body today!! I love these cars and have owned seven or eight of them over the years - all wagons except for a '78 Aspen T-top. I still own a '78 Aspen wagon with slant "Super Six" (two barrel carb) and the factory four speed overdrive trans. It only has 30K miles and NO rust. Of course these cars being built between '76 and '80 were no real "muscle car", but they were fun and reliable. Some people love to hate on them because of their early rust and build quality problems, particularly for the years '76-'77, but by '78 Mopar had largely worked out the problems and they were good cars for the most part. The M body was the spin off of the F body, and essentially the same car with different styling, and Mopar kept making them until what, 1989? This particular Aspen is very interesting in that it does not appear to have ever been molested. Everything seems to be factory - from the optional chrome sport mirrors to the 14" Rally Wheels. It's also quite a find and unusual in that it has the 360 V8 in it, which as you said, represented the top of the line engine available. The speedometer in the trunk is likely the original one to the car because it goes to 100MPH. The one in the dash only goes to 85MPH which did not come in F bodies until 1979. The hand cranked sun roof is original and quite rare to find. The small rectangular "DODGE" emblem you found in the console is also not for this car but came out on the '79's. This '76 would have had a script type "Aspen" emblem on the right side of the trunk lid. The grille is special to this RT model also as it is blacked out and would have "R/T" letters in the center emblem rather than the standard Dodge crest on the silver grille. These black R/T grilles are rare as hen's teeth and worth quite a bit of money. Too bad this one is broken, but all the grilles from the F bodies were fragile - particularly the "egg-crate" grilles of the '78-'79 Volare's. For 1980, the last year for the F body Volares and Aspens, the front end styling was changed to a more squared off version with rectangular headlights and a more plain look. Also, the front and rear bumpers were simplified and protruded even further out from the car to meet the impact demands of the time. One of the most significant issues with these cars is rust in the frame rails, particularly in the front drivers side due to a design flaw which let water and dirt accumulate inside. The fender rust issues on the '76-'77 F bodies, which haters love to cite, is not really a problem as millions of replacement fenders were made and are easily obtainable. Mopar easily solved the problem by installing a plastic wheel well liner in the '78-'80 F's. That had been a REAL expensive oversight for Ma Mopar those first two years. Personally, I have always loved the look of these cars. They were available in all sorts of configurations, coupes, sedans, wagons, basic, luxury, "hot", and after '77, options abounded! The rare Super Coupes of '78 are very cool, as are the Kit Cars. Take your pick of options and platform and build what you want! I even have the upgraded tan plaid "Hillcrest" interior seats and door panels in my yellow wagon, and a factory AM/FM/CB transceiver with one year only power antenna in mine! "Breaker-breaker!" I love the floor mounted four speed and the rock solid Super Six! It's not fast, but I don't care - it's a fun cruiser and also quite useful on periodic trips to Lowes! Great find Benny - It's really a shame that nobody jumped on this survivor before it got tossed in the junkyard! Thanks for the video and not automatically hating on it!!

Whoa Nelley, 1976 and hit the bricks. Yes, "Malaise Muscle" or as I call it "Sticker Muscle". Mostly show and no go, but I think it should be saved by someone. Although, it's a bit rough and there's not a big market for them. My coworker has a few of these, I'm going to send him this. We got the VIN, we win: N for Dodge Aspen, L for low price class, 29 for two door special coupe, K for 360 CID V8 with two barrel, aka "Mover and Shaker of 1976", 6 for 1976 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hamtramck, MI plant also called "Factory Zero", "D-Ham" (for "Detroit/Hamtramck") or "Dodge Main" operated from 1911 to 1980 as a Chrysler facility and today's GM Hamtramck, MI assembly sits on part of the old site. It was a massive complex when it was a Chrysler facility. This one was assembled on Wednesday April 7, 1976. You can buy reproduction decals for these cars from Phoenix Graphix, among other sources. The Sears radials were likely either Pirelli or Michelin sourced back in 1977. My grandparents had a 1980 Volare with the "Leaning Tower of Power" and was also made at "Factory Zero" (possibly one of the last ones made there). They sold it in 1986 after my grandmother had a heart attack in 1985 and was told by her doctor she had to have a car with AC, which that car did not have. It was sold for a 1982 Skyhawk that came as a trade from the Cadillac dealership my father worked at. They had it until 1989 when they bought a Chevy Cavalier (which eventually I wound up with). No, the Aspen and Volare are "F body" cars. We got (some of) the tag, we can brag: G11 for tinted glass all windows, H51 for air conditioner and heater, single unit, B41 for front disc brakes, power assisted, G54 for left hand outside racing mirror, C16 for console and bucket seats, J52 for inside hood release, 407 for Wednesday April 7, 1976 production, some sort of "M" code for a sunroof, E57 for 360 CID V8 with two barrel, possible D36 for 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, possible D53 for 3.21:1 rear axle ratio, D91 for Sure Grip rear axle, N88 for auto speed control (cruise control, so yes it was OEM original), 26 for 26" radiator, G01 for electric rear window defogger, possible A2 for Silver Cloud exterior paint or J2 for Platinum exterior paint, U for USA specification vehicle, among other codes. The tags are dirty and tough to read. Whoa Nelley, F body looking a bit shoddy. That's it, time to quit. MOPAR not going very far. 727 and going to Heaven. Going to be flat and that's that. Painted Moondust and has some rust. In rust we do not trust. 360 and gotta go. Assembled in "D-Ham" but needs a grand slam. Going to get squished and all of the MOPAR faithful, possibly Benny, many here, and slightly so, the Google Man is going to be a bit pissed.
