One more thing ; the clicking in neutral could confirm that the clearance between the dog clutches is not equal and also point to a shift selection drum bad shimming. It is not that complicated to solve, just need a bit of time (and opening the gearbox..).

It could be : 1) Too much play in the shift lever (but seems to be ok) 2) Shift selection drum not shimmed correctly. You will find a fantastic document from Pete Roper "Gearbox "clunk" - the fix" detailing the operation and explaining the why. I'm busy rebuilding my 1976 T3 and had to go trough the process.

I have just rebuilt my Spada box and it is so much better. Read Pete roper article . I found on mine nut on input shaft loose , needle roller coming out of case and shift drum slopping back and forth. Not to difficult but time consuming.

Have you tried altering the eccentric adjuster at the rear of the gearbox? Did you rebuild the gearbox?
