5 Grand Nationals and only 2 horses ever finished ahead of him. One was L’escargot who had also just won the Cheltenham Gold cup, so a top top horse and the other was Rag Trade who Red Rum was narrowly beaten by. Other than them, he beat every other horse in 5 races. Astounding achievement. There will never be one like it again in the Grand National

There was a question on Family Fortunes a couple of days ago .'Name a famous horse'(this could be any horse fact or fiction, not just racehorses) Red Rum was the top answer with 43 out of 100 people naming him. This question was asked 43 years after his retirement, and 26 years after he passed away. It just underlines what a fantastic legacy Red Rum left on the nation. Rummy was so loved and still is.

@@sindento1942 ... well the name of the game is jumping ... and the national had the hardest fences, at least back then ... so Red Rum was the best jumper ever ... if you want to talk fastest jumper well thats another question ... would Arkle have even got round, we will never know, would Tiger roll have jumped the fences back then, again we will never know ... what we do know is a little horse who had a poor start in life and was like a wet rag in a field when he was saved and went to Southport with bad feet ran the National at its hardest and never fell or looked like it in 5 outings coming 1st 3 times and 2nd 2 times ... winning under top weight of 12st on his 2nd start at Liverpool and never looked tired at the end did get round time and time again ... they count the winners at the end and if you don't finish you can't be counted ... @@jeanlawley6483 You have to remember the first National winner,Lottery,quite appropriate for what was to come.There's been some massive upsets over the years.Over the last few years the course and fences have been made much safer,and about time.Many owners of top class chasers wouldn't risk their horses in such a race due to how unpredictable it was.You need luck as well has natural ability but none of that counts if some horse comes down and drags you down with it and many horses that ran back then wouldn't be allowed to now,they just weren't good enough. Red Rum was the best horse ever over the National course there's no doubt about that,away from Aintree his limitations were exposed though.

I worked with a man who was a big racing fan, he only used to really bet on flat races (He said that there were enough things to think about without fences if your money was on a horse.) But he went to Aintree every year. He told me two things about that race and Red Rum. He said that year was the only time he saw the track bookies take a real hammering. Everyone was betting heavy on what they fancied to win but also putting a side bet on Red Rum, so if they had £50 on Curchtown Boy they put £20 on Red rum if £500 on another horse £100 on Red Rum. He said that virtually no one there that day had no money on Red Rum to win, just because they wanted him to. The other thing that he said was. "If the National was run over 6 miles over those fences, that horse would have won all 5." Some horse. A British sporting hero.

What I think is most astonishing of all about that horse was that he just made it look so easy, for what is by far, the toughest horse race in the world, and at a time when the fences were at their highest and toughest. His finish to win his third Grand National always has and always will stay with me, because it really was a miracle. What an astonishing horse, who is much missed. A quite remarkable horse: to jump 150 fences, run some 22 and half miles, never fall, rarely falter and carry heavy weights . I witnessed all this and am so glad I did. I truly believe we will never see his like again. Good horses will come and go, occasionally great horses will come and go but there will never ever be one of the calibre of Red Rum. His story is all the more poignant if you consider his quite dreadful history of inept trainers, bad jockeys and pedal bone ossification. Rummy - simply the best .

You said it. To have 3 wins and two seconds in a race where only about 1/3 of the horses finish is incredible. To have raced a hundred times and managed to stay on his feet in all of them is mind boggling. WHAT A HORSE! Feel bad for the horse that fell at fence 6 and looked like it had a spinal injury. They must have had to hustle to get him off the course before the second lap. Red Rum’s trainer disapproved of the changes they made since Tummy’s time to make the course safer . Decreasing the drop after the fence at Becher’s and making some fences smaller. The trainer predicted it would make riders more reckless and the statistics seem to support his position. Kind of like frangible pins in eventing. Designers make trappier combinations because they figure it’ll give way if someone misses (the one study done showed they frequently don’t) and riders think the same thing. Pesky unintended consequences.

Red Rum never fell in 150 consecutive huge national fences despite carrying 12 stone & being a small horse.

Your words remind me upon many other G1 winners without success as a GN runner: Tidal Bay, Silvinaco Conti, Imperial Commander, Long Run, Lord Windamare, etc. I have to say there have been less and less owners or trainers to risk their G1 heroes into those handicap races such as GN, at least the circumstance has been not quite the same at it was before 1990s.

@@connorhancox7402 thanks for mentioning the up coming new star of the show Tiger Roll but we can never take away what the greatest horse REDRUM ever has done though but I'D love to see Tiger Roll equal the record but from what I read last year not long after Tiger Roll winning the national for the 2nd time it was felt they don't want to put him in the national again

@@David.L291 Tiger Roll is a lovely little horse with great potential, but he can never equal Red Rum's incredible achievements over those staggeringly huge fences and perilous drops, even if he did win a third, which I very much doubt. Red Rum has no equal, now or in the future, in my opinion

It's only really when you look back to these 1970s Nationals that you fully realise how neutered and frankly dull the race now is with tons of loose spruce thrown onto mere hurdles in comparison with these awesomely difficult obstacles. Perhaps such "progress" was inevitable but the truth is that the great race is no more. There is a race called the Grand National but it bears no resemblance to the past.
@johnshort5003

In those days the race was magical and it's a pity about the change to the fences but there were too many fatalities so if the change prevents horses' deaths then I suppose it had to be. What I really hate is this idiotic avoidance of fences now and not being able to remount. Things have gone too far.
@tigerarmyrule
5 жыл бұрын
@@johnshort5003 I agree John. It had to be given the politically inspired focussing on the occasional equine fatality. We really see how the fences are changed not so much in the national where big fields still cause some chaos due to refusals and Pulled ups but in the lesser shorter races such as the Sefton and Topham where smaller fields reveal just how neutered to fences have become. fallers at the likes of Becher's and the Chair as rare as hen's teeth. Its actually sad seeing just how toothless and banal Becher's now is.
@johnshort5003

@@tigerarmyrule If you look through the records available online you'll find a constant occurrence of horse deaths going back decades and I don't like to think it's just for our entertainment. However, I think they've gone too far now with the fences probably easier than on any regular course. They could have left the plain fences at least, and just softened the Chair and Becher's. It's much less of a race now and I loved the old National more than anyone. The truth is the magic came from the danger but we're not Romans in the Coliseum are we?
@tigerarmyrule
5 жыл бұрын
@@johnshort5003 My angle on it John is that if we are no longer allowed have a race which is built on the thrill of danger ( and I accept in our political climate we can't even though fact is millions me included would love it) then we simply cannot have a Grand National. I know the finances of National Hunt demand it stay as a centrepiece for the second biggest NH festival but for fans it is a shadow. I can't help feeling all the hype is built round a lie....its a long distance handicap now with a big purse which attracts high class handicappers. I'll watch it as i usually do but I will do so with no sense of anticipation or expectation.

He was a legend then and he is a Legend now ... having read the book of his life and witnessed his wins I can tell you this horse was all heart and class, no silver spoon in his mouth

I was 14 at the time and my father offered to place £1 on a horse of my choosing. I chose Red Rum and dad refused to place the bet saying Rummy was too old and carrying too much weight to win. I went without a bet, and gave my dad a bit of a hard time later that day! In fairness, he coughed up the winnings out of his own pocket!
