Cale was really putting on a show trying to keep that Laguna under control in 3 and 4 ... seeing old NASCAR races, drivers, and the old, big cars like this is like seeing pictures of old friends that are gone ... you're sad that you can't live those days again, but the sight of 'em still brings a big smile 🙂 ...

Aside from the awesome racing, I could identify with the cars they drove... I had a Monte Carlo, I had an Olds Cutlass, I had a K Body Regal, I had a Torino, I had a 428 Bonneville... I owned most of these cars at one point or another. Now a days I wouldn't buy, let alone drive, what the current cars are modeled on.

Quite a challenge. Racing Talladega at night without lights on the speedway.

You never see the driver get out of the car these days and he himself remove the hood pins and raise the hood to do some actual work

Listen to those big blocks and watch them fight the steering wheel.

By 1977 everyone was pretty much running small blocks - Chrysler had stopped making the 340 racing blocks and there was a severe shortage of parts for Petty Enterprises and the teams running Dodges. That ultimately lead to Petty switching to GM during 1978 (that a the terrible Dodge Magnum body they were forced to run with the old Dodge Charger no longer being legal to run). Ford had similar shortages of racing blocks a few years later with no new racing Clevelands being made (eventually a Windsor racing block was introduced and run with Cleveland style Aluminum heads - aka the "Clevor").

All that excess front end weight from the large big block engines, didn't help with the handling

1975 was the last year that Chevrolet put a big block 454 in a mid size car, like the Malibu/Laguna A body

Lagunas THCK in 1977 races, as Monte Carlo was just entering the field. Leading late..in a pack of Lagunas is why NASCAR banned them from competition at end of season. I'm driving a 75 Laguna S-3....(and NEED a grille.) Cale drove one, and Janet Guthrie too... Richard Childress in # 3 ... Dave Marcis in the # 2 Mercury sponsored by CAM 1 oil products was later driven by Bill Elliott.

GM was allowed to cheat so bad in the 70s it was disgusting - first the limited edition Laguna S-3 - then all the GM cars ran Olds at the speedway races when the S-3 was banned. Should never have been allowed to change makes based on track - what a bunch of BS. If Ford had tried that NASCAR would never had allowed it. Total BS.

The S-3 - not the stock Laguna. S-3 was a limited edition specific for NASCAR - never should have been allowed IMHO. Good looking car though.
