As a teenager, I was impressed by Koch. But I'm a lot wiser now. East Germany cheated its way to so many gold medals. I look at this now with very very suspicious eyes. Marita Koch no longer impresses me. Sorry. Donna Hartley ran very well, and Irina Schewinska was a beautiful, graceful runner.

@@keithf_ many people share your views, but mine will never change. All the greats , seem to have their image tarnished with drug accusations for this period. For me Marita was the best over so many distances due to hard work and dedication and would have been a top athlete, Even if she had or hadn’t been part of the DDR drug program,

Leighton Steven I don't have respect for Koch, now. The great Sharron Davies won an Olympic silver medal, beaten by East Germany's Petra Schneider. Years later Schneider developed very serious health problems brought on entirely by the drugs she was administered by the East German state. As Sharron Davies said so eloquently 'There were two losers in the pool that night. Myself, who won silver, and Petra who won gold' East Germany cheated, period.

@@keithf_ Hi Keith, It looks as Sharron will at last be getting her well deserved Gold Medal! The new head of FINA wants to address the cheating from the past and award medals to those, that missed out due to the drug cheats. About bloody time...

Paul Kennedy Thanks for posting, Paul. Its way way too late for all this. Should have happened decades ago, when East Germany was still a state. And I wonder if Sharron Davies will be compensated FINANCIALLY for the revenue she failed to earn by not being an Olympic gold medalist. ... and another thing ... they can think about removing the world records still held by Koch (400 metres women) and Kratochvilova (800 metres women). Both those eastern bloc athletes cheated.

As if a tiny country like East Germany could produce so many gold medal and world record-breaking performances without state sponsored drug cheating. Makes me puke. Irena Szewińska was the best athlete in the World for 10 years 1968-78 but of course never got the success of those that cheated.

@@waynehentley4332 most likely? I was a competing Polish sprinter way back.in the 70s. I never knew who was taking what. Dianobol was available but Szewinska never looked bulky enough. She was natural, after only 3 years of training she would win medals in 1964. Steroids will help you if you are a prodigy, otherwise get yourself a bucketful of steroids and you will clock 9.4 over 100 meters. But I have to say they help, I did 10.4, did that make me a champ? Nope!

@@waynehentley4332 She was winning gold medals at 18 years of age in 1964 so I'm not sure what you mean. As far as Marita Koch is concerned she had a far less bulky physique when she got the world record in Australia in 1985 than she did here, though we know subsequently that there was a systematic drugs programme in the GDR and the allegation was that Marita complained about the small dose of anabolics she was administered.

The American team should be ashamed of themselves. Not only did they not run well they werent even trying to get the baton off quickly! WHAT you think it doesnt matter how fast you take the baton? The American teams are suposedly to be the most experienced in relays but yet the outgoing runners dont have the common sense to realize the oncoming runner is coming in very tired and slows down the last few steps. Instead of waiting for them they prematurely take off. What like the incoming runner is going to have another kick and catch up to you. Frickin idiots. You all should have been fined $5,000.
