1978 was Bum Phillips 4th year as Oilers HC and at the time he had not taken the Oilers to the playoffs. This was the first year of the current 16 game regular season and an extra wild card team was added in both conferences.

They were 10-4 in 1975 his first season. Didn't make playoffs because they lost all 4 games against the Steelers and the Bengals. And that was 3 years before they drafted Earl Campbell.

Check out those Country- Kentucky Fried style Columbia- Baby Light Blue and Southern Cherry Red Houston Oilers uniforms from 1978. Southern Hospitality , but sweet and cool uniforms, especially the Earl Campbell and Bum Philips era. But unfortunately, 40 years later, and I'm sorry i hate to say, they're now Tennessee Titans. Ooooouuuuucccccchhhhhh😤! But nevertheless I would like to say thank you for playing this NFL Video. RIP Bum Philips. It is quite obvious that the Oilers should to stay in Houston instead of moving to Tennessee in 1997. Thanks for playing anyway. This is the 1978 season to remember.

Bum was too nice of a guy. Probably why never got to the super bowl. Bud Adam's was a terrible owner. Fired him right after a playoff loss to the raiders. Oilers had a good team, but pittsburgh stood in their way in 78 and 79. I don't see where trading away pastorini for Stabler who was past his prime added anything. Looking back I think bum was the best coach that franchise ever had.

12/17/2023 The Titans wore their Oiler unis. They got embarrassed. Vrabel attempted the Bum Phillips look. Vrabel is NO Bum Phillips. Vrabel isn’t worthy of scraping cow dung off Bum’s boots.

@@JohnDoe-nj3vj Yes, they would've. The difference would be the quarterback. Staubach was the superior QB. Pastorini was average at best.
