For those who don't know, Andretti's friend and rival Ronnie Peterson died at the Italian GP at Monza only 5 days prior.

Also, this completes the entire 1978 USAC Champ Car Series on YT, or, at least the races that are known to exist on tape.

The Silverstone race was not recorded by anyone? That's a real shame.

It's interesting that, more than a decade before NASCAR closed the pits when a caution came out to allow the field to bunch up prior to opening the pits, which they began doing during the 1989 season, USAC ended up doing so, albeit briefly.

Finally someone posted this race, and it's not the Black and white version that I have seen in race trading circles. Great video quality and nice find!

Who thought a 150-mile race at Michigan was a good idea when the cars got fast enough so they could do that in well under an hour? Who would pay to go see that?

judging by the crowd, more people came to see that then went to the final michigan 500. so, plenty of people. lol

A good point, but theres a good chance that they werent the only show that day. If i remember correctly, i saw nascar and indy car race there on the same day when i was a kid. Might have been the Firecracker 400, not sure.

@@ronfox5519 The Firecracker 400 was at Daytona. I don't think NASCAR and Indycar have ever raced together. Maybe USAC stock cars.

@@bduddy55555 During that time, most races outside of the 500’s were double features with USAC stock cars and Indy cars. After USAC ended its stock car series, the ASA series ran the stock car portion of the shorter Michigan event for several years. It wasn’t until the later 80’s that the Indycars became the only “main event” on a given race weekend.
