I played in a Patriots alumni golf tournament a few years ago and Steve Grogan was in our foursome. What a great, humble guy. Bought a couple of rounds of beer after and treated us like old friends. I told him my Dad used to say "If Tony Eason had 1/10 the balls that Grogan had, he'd have been in the Hall of Fame." Grogan smiled and said quietly, "Your Dad won't get an argument from me."

Only watched the first five minutes so far…seems kinda weird that, other than Howard calling Jack Tatum controversial , at the beginning there’s no reference whatsoever to what happened on the same field between the same teams in a preseason game just a month or so earlier. Obviously there’s been some editing here…I’m guessing they musta talked about Darryl Stingley before the opening kickoff. To not do so woulda been ignoring the elephant in the room.

I'm watching this just to see what the crew says about Tatum and what he did to Stingley. Jack Tatum didn't apologize to the man. A real POS

@@mongoslade277 after seeing your response, I just finally watched the game all the way through myself. Amazingly, there does not not seem to be a single mention of Darryl Stingley (the closest thing seems to be when Howard read a telegram from Bart Starr apologizing for comments he had made regarding a hit Tatum made in the previous week’s Raiders-Packers game). They MUST HAVE talked about it in the pre-game show, which is completely missing here. It would just be extremely hard to believe that they didn’t bring up the subject at all

John Madden and Chuck Fairbanks last seasons as NFL head coaches. The Raiders missed the playoffs. Stabler threw the second most interceptions in the league. With all the talent they had, the Patriots should have gone farther in the playoffs. Like Stabler, Steve Grogan was plagued by interceptions in 1978. He had rely on his running to compensate for his throwing errors. The 78 Patriots had set the single season record for rushing yardage despite not having a thousand yard runner.

Stabler & Fran Tarkenton were tied in interceptions going into the last game of the season when Minnesota played at Oakland. Tarkenton threw 5 interceptions. Stabler threw 1 but only played the 1st half. Tarkenton retired after the playoffs

The 1978 edition of the New England Patriots was good. The 1976 edition should have been a Super Bowl representative for the AFC. They were robbed because The Sullivan family was trash in the eyes of the NFL. watch the "penalty" on Hamilton in Oakland VS. New England.....then leave your comment.

Stabler was never the same after the 1976 season where the Raiders won the super bowl. He looked really bad in this game. Probably a lot of it had to do with knee problems. By todays standards even his 1976 stats would have been pretty mediocre! I think it is interesting watching these old games as the game was played so differently. Notice on almost every down you see two running backs on the field behind the QB. They ran the ball a lot more and sometimes when I watch these old games I keep thinking why in the heck did they run it on some downs that today would be passing ones! I did not see too much of this in this game, but you can also see a lot of hits in these old games that would be penalties now! I also thought it was cool when they showed Jim Plunkett on the sidelines. Just two years later he would lead the Raiders to a super bowl win!

Have to remember that the rules were so different then. DBs could mug WRs before getting off the LOS and WRs could get smacked over the middle. It was much harder to throw the ball.

All kinds of fun Trivia for these two teams. Raiders who would leave to join the Patriots: CB Mike Haynes, RB Mark Van Eeghan, WR Morris Brawshaw, and backup QB David Humm (who would return later in time to enjoy the '83 Super Bowl). Patriots who would go to the Raiders: Don Hasselbeck TE and one other guy I saw but then forgot which one before I wrote this. Don Hasselbeck's son would go on to QB Seattle years later and be on the same team with Lofa Tatupu who was the son of Mosi, Don's teammate in this game. Both Terry Robiskie (Raiders) and Art Shell would go on to become head coaches in the NFL. Terry's stint was as an Interim coach for Cleveland while Art had two separate stints with the Raiders. EDIT: Okay, I had it wrong about Art Shell, it was Upsaw I was thinking of. So quit sending me "Giraffe panties" :P Early in this game you see a pass from Stabler to Fred Biletnikoff. It dawned on me after that play that both guys are now dead. So is Art Shell who was blocking for them. Other players in this game who died: Jack Tatum, Mosi Tatupu, and John Matuzak.
