The Cubs in 1979 did have some firepower but their pitching was bad just like all the years of the 70s. They had back in the early 70s Fergie Jenkins and the late 70s Rick Reuschel and Bruce Sutter, but that was basically it for any good pitching.

Cubs were fourteeen over .500 in late August, but crashed and burned in September. I remember a game getting over very late on a Sunday in Los Angeles, then they had to fly home to a quick turnaround against St. Louis on Labor Day. Franks once again burned out Bruce Sutter, and by the final week of the season he was publicly ripping players, especially Bill Buckner. The slide would carry over into 1980, 81, and much of '82, a period of time when the Cubs were the worst team, and organization, in baseball. Players who should have been the nucleus of those teams like Bill Madlock, Manny Trillo, Steve Stone and Andre Thornton were scattered around the league because the cheap Cubs wouldn't re sign them. They showed flashes in 1983, then shocked the world in '84 with a completely revamped roster and organization.

- Expos would've had to win their final game & hope the Pirates lost; Montreal would then have needed to play a doubleheader the following day to try & finish in a 1st-place tie & force a playoff for the division title. As such though, the Pirates simply took care of their business in the end. And ultimately went on to win the World Series in '79 as well.
@paulsonj72

Actually Montreal just needed a win in Sunday to force the doubleheader on Monday morning. The Expos would have been 96-64 with the win while Pittsburgh finished 98-64. But of course Montreal lost to finish 95-65

If the Expos had won that day they would have gone to Atlanta for a make up double header as they would have been one game behind and they had played two fewer games than the Pirates due to weather. In that era MLB didn’t want division titles to be determined by teams playing fewer games than another team(except 1972 due to the strike that year)
