Downwind. SUCH an album and tune. The tune itself features the best guitar work by Mike Oldfield ever; it is glorious. Xtasea and Emotions are also fabby tunes. I saw Pierre Moerlen's Gong at college in '79; my first introduction to Gong. One of the few things from my college days that I haven't forgotten 😂

For those of you finding Oldfield-esque sounds in this, that is because Pierre Moerlen was the choice of Mike Oldfield in many of his translations of his compositions, both live and in studio. They supported The Beach Boys in Knebworth in 1980, and it was technically Pierre Moerlen's Gong, featuring Mike Oldfield's band! (Amazing drum solo at the end of Ommadawn!)

PMG's album Downwind was recorded at Mike Oldfield's studio in Througham, Gloucestershire...and Mike played guitar on it. Sno surprise if parts of it are Oldfield-esque.

Zappas way should have been applied to this band: Record everything in the best possible way, in case something historic would happen - because this is is a historic epic dimension. I would like to imagine this music with todays multitrack high quality microphones, skilled mixing... The headphone-experience would leave me stunned. Why is this not at least one hour long?

No wonder if it reminds of Oldfield, Moerlen played on seven of Oldfield's records, including "Ommadawn" and "Incantations", and there is also a recording of "Tubular Bells" with Moerlen.

I recall seeing PMG give a truly stunning performance at Birmingham University in 1979 (almost certainly this line-up). They played virtually the whole of their then new record "Time Is The Key". And the performance was "televised" using what looked like old studio floor cameras (ex ATV Studios?) I wonder if the recording exists anywhere?
