So I did order the AFR gauge but did some testing today, the fuel pump pressure was so low It was not moving the needle on the gauge, I had a filter with a fuel return, so I blocked the return, and now I have the most simple setup, Tank------Pump------Carburator no return. Went for a 30-minute drive, and all was good, plugs are still pale but not dusty white. Tomorrow I will install an electric fuel pump with the return and see how it goes. The manifold was at about 550 f. (much better than yesterday) I think I might have this figured out soon, thanks for listening and you're great advice.

Great news!, installed a carter electric fuel pump (had a spare, yes I have a lot of parts) , and everything is good now, temp a steady 190, exhaust manifold at about 450 F (was over 700) and plugs are normal (no more lean plugs) Thanks for listening, I was really out of Ideas, and writing to you made me realize what I missed. I truly appreciate all your videos and the fact you always answer your fans. Your a good spiderman

Hi there…so I was having backfiring through my 32/36…thought it was the Carburator: did an overhaul on it and the backfiring continued…in fact, after a couple of weeks, got worse. So I went for a new distributor, cap, rotor, and plugs…stil the backfiring persisted…did some reading…turned the dizzy till I could hear the engine running more smoothly. Tighten the dizzy back and went for a drive to see if the backfiring will still appear after I put the car under load, like climbing steep streets…nothing. No backfiring! Still like that after couple of drive arounds. So, how bad is to keep driving it without having properly set the timing? I did it by ear, remember, not with a light gun. Thx.

You are probably pretty close with your ear. Seems to me the timing retards a little every few thousand miles. If it runs, it runs. Alway a good idea to check it with the light and set it about 10 BTDC.

If it's too far advanced, you get some detonation in thr upper rpms. Will sound like the valves are rattling. Higher octane fuel will let you advance some more.

Hi Eldes, Not sure what to do, after 10 years of working on my car, I am helping a local in Montreal get his spider back on the road. It's been sitting for many years but it mostly working now, but I have one problem that's driving me crazy. The engine compartment is very hot and I diagnosed the engine is running lean (white spark plugs), the car has the same setup as mine, 32/36 weber the single-hole intake. So I compared the jets in my card and it looks like the same jets in both carbs. Did some more digging and looked at the timing, and noticed the vacuum advance was not working, so I ordered a new distributor to replace it and that looks good now. Re did the timing all good (looking at your video, great stuff as usual). Go for a spin, after 20 minutes I can start to feel the heat, and the manifold is over 700 degrees F. mine runs at about 425 max. The car has a mechanical fuel pump, could this be a problem (I did not check the fuel pressure but as I am writing this message that could be a good idea.)I was about to order some bigger jets (145 & 150) but wanted to get your opinion if possible. I also bought the 170 thermostats that I have not installed yet. One other odd thing, is the car runs hotter at highway speeds ( not overheating but probably close to 220)at lower speeds, it often goes back to 190. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Greg

Couple things hot engine temps, not gonna get up to 220 except with a cooling system problem. Fuek pump. If it works it works. If the car is running satisfactory in all RPMs fuel pump is functioning. Jets sound a little lean but they're altitude related. Best way is with an Air Fuel Meter to check for proper metering. Fuel jets won't increase the engine temps by much. 170 thermostat will only open the thermostat quicker and will not fix a problem. Sounds like you need to blow out the radiator fins and/or clean out the cooling system. Look at the Texas Heat radiator over at Vickauto.com. I put that on the 79 and it was in this 80, no overheating here in 100° F Texas. Probably fix what's getting you. Also check under the coolant neck on the manifold. Some people put another thermostat under there back on the day.

Which direction do you turn the distributor to advance? Counterclockwise? How far to get you the 10 degrees you wanted back?
@ELDESTBuilds

Clockwise is advanced, you need a timing light to be sure.

@@ELDESTBuilds are you sure? Mine speeds up when I twist counterclockwise.
