I had no idea that Jim Hall's car with ground effects ran in 1979! I thought it was first in 1980 with Rutherford. Wow. It looks so modern out there compared to other cars. Gorgeous. I was at Indy when Al Unser Sr. won his 4th in another notorious yellow car in 1987.

Anyone noticed that they show Gordon Johncock putting on a Simpson helmet but later sitting in his car with his special Bell mailslot helmet. They must have edited in footage from another day when preparing the evening broadcast.

In 1989 I bought the interior out of 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car 480054. The front facing side of the inside rear view mirror had a white sticker with a black 2 digit number on it which puzzled me. In 1994 I read an article in one of the Mustang magazines about a 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car “500 Festival” car. After reading the article I thought that 480054 was a “500 Festival” car. Upon more research I’m 99.9% sure it was a 500 Festival car. That car had 3 major repairs from a front crash, right side T-bone and a right side roll. It was scrapped in a salvage yard near Austin Minnesota in the early 1990’s.

Watching this in 2022 I watched it when it was first on. But I cannot believe that they didn't have to change tires as much as they do now. As far as the technology has improved in the proformance of the cars of today it appears that the tires have gotten worse despite all the supposed changes to the tires.

I Remember Seeing A KZitem Video Of The Late Bobby Unser Saying That This 1979 Indy 500 Was Supposed To Be His Race To Win! Yeah,Bobby Unser said the 1979 race was his biggest disappointment ever at Indy...No way Mears catches AND passes him....No way.

@@asianoramaagain2269 Of course, when Bobby lost his top gear (and he wasn't the only contender to suffer that malady on that day, because that's what knocked Johnny Rutherford out of contention), he and Mears still had a pit stop left to make (which Mears made with about 12-15 laps left), so it was entirely possible that Mears could have gotten the lead from Bobby in an exchange of pit stops, but it would have been difficult for him to pass the much more experienced Unser on the track, despite having a slightly faster car.

@@cjs83172 Good point on the pit stop scenario.Mears said he thought he could have passed Bobby in an interview once.Then he paused,smiled, and said "I'm sure he doesn't think so." Anyone that knows Bobby Unser's personality can guarantee he would have NEVER conceded that Mears could have passed him.
@cjs83172

@@asianoramaagain2269 And the other thing that could have come into play was a late race restart. 1979 was the first year cars were allowed to bunch up behind a pace car under the caution, and given how the race eventually played out, there would have been a late restart because of the caution for Tom Sneva's crash with about 10 laps left, with the green coming back out with 5 laps left. Given how evenly matched those two Penske cars were, it's entirely possible they would have been nose-to-tail for a late-race restart.
