Been working on my older gears watches for the last 8 months. Might change it up and dig into my electrics. Good refresher video. Back in 1980 I fell in love with this watch, it was in Boots on a board where you could play with it and listen to the alarms, left school and got my 1st job in 81 where I saved £25 and bought it - 1 year later after my YTS job finished I got a job in a bakery, whilst making meat pies, I noticed the top strip where the speaker is - was missing? Obviously went in to a pie, so after that, I took it to pieces and painted the reflector with yellow fog lamp paint, a bit like nail varnish set up... a long time later, I still have the module with the speaker glued on - where the case went is anybody's guess? lol... 41 years later I can still go upstairs and pick the fully working module up minus the battery - with a yellow screen lol :)

I think the light pusher you may have put the "set" pusher which I seem to remember on some Casio they were less pronounced than the function pushers so less likely to inadvertently set the watch by casual presses, it would explain the different shape and size to the other 3.

A trip to memory (or is it melody)lane for me as well. As I told on the Facebook group. My mom got irritated by me, playing the melodies a bit too ofen when I was a 10 years old kid, back in 1981. She took my watch away from me and said I would get it back later. When later came, she could not find the watch again. She insisted that she did put it in a drawer. But could not find it anymore. It was never "found" again. Is suspect (no matter what my mother says) that it must have ended up in the garbage bin. 😞

I had this model bought from Dixon’s 1980/81. I was around 10 years old and needed to make my parents lives a misery until they bought it for me. I’ve still got it and it works but the case is down to the base metal in places where I tried to restore it as a teenager with a 40 grit disc abrader, thinking the case was solid steel and I could just ‘buff the scratches out’. I thought the best tune of the many stored in its memory was Kalinka, probably not the most popular number at the moment though.. I’ve also got the ‘solid’ gold Seiko memory watch 😊 1983 which is hideous and completely impractical. It was only worn a couple of times due to the class room ridicule before being relegated to the bottom of a drawer for decades.

Hi Mike, great video as always! I have a 1985 steel digital Casio with 100m WR (Marlin). I want to renew the gaskets to get it back its water resistance. Do you just have many generic gaskets lying around? And just grease on the pushers is enough like in the vid?
@MyRetroWatches
Жыл бұрын
That’s a difficult one and no one will guarantee water resistance on an old watch. You can easily change the caseback gasket but pusher gaskets are really hard to size correctly given they are so small. Equally the pusher have to be removed and not all of them have e clips like this one in the video. Some you need a special press tool to remove them from the case. Then there is the crystal gasket which might be good but equally if an old watch of 40 years will have gone hard.

The speaker actually pries out pretty easily. It's held on by something like double-sided tape... This is actually not critical to keep in place as the module holds the speaker against the case all on its own. I was able to remove the speaker and see the grille from the backside. Looking through the grille, I was able to use a needle to poke through the holes and ensure that they were unobstructed.

I remember this watch from the very early '80s and I was going to buy one but instead went with a TI and was happy with that but I always thought this one was cooler because of the music. The Texas Instruments seemed 'adult' and more rational, but I love that Casio and it's great to see that yours works so well again. And you're absolutely right about mesmerizing for kids in school. I had a girl who sat next to me in social studies and her family were recent Russian expatriates. She had never seen a digital watch like the Texas Instruments. Most kids who grew up during the Soviet era could not hope to have such things. She was mesmerized by it and asked me to look at it at her desk for about an hour while she completely zoned into it, which totally mesmerized ME as she sat with it gently in her hands, running her fingers over it, gently pushing the buttons, trying it on, etc. I had a crush on her and just to see her interested in anything about me was a trip. President Ford had a Seiko Bel-mattic and he would set the alarm and say he had a meeting to get to when he wanted to cut something short. I recently acquired that same watch and that’s part of the history of that watch. I like to know any historical reference for any vintage watches I have.

Mike: "There's a bit of rainbowing here..." Me: "Oh, I guess he's going to explain how to fix that..." Mike: "There's nothing you can do about that." Me: :(

haha Sorry Erik. Someone in the comments mentioned changing the polarizing filter. this could work if there is nothing printed on the screen but its not without its own risks.

@@MyRetroWatches that could work. I'd look at donor screen, not very likely with something like that. I did some digital watch fixing in somewhat austere conditions :) Good video, and now I want one of these.

I am sat here polishing my "quality" whilst watching with interest as I have an ancient A904 Seiko I have long long not cleaned for fear of buggering it up beyond repair, finished my bronze Tandorio and now working cleaning my Aliexpress "Willard-o-like" then the usual weekly brasso wadding and dremel attack on my Soviet tank watches as very therapeutic polishing them... I do like my shiny :D

I had this exact model!I miss it so much! It was one of the coolest gadgets for a younger person in the 80s... I was 20 then.

I'm not a fan of electronic watches, but it was interesting to watch you repair this watch. Thank you for your hard work and diligence.

Me, I am a major collector of Soviet quartz pieces... after so many going bad on me I can see why you don't like 'em lol I had a Chaika "big blue" resonator for a whole day and I dropped it... dead bloody cheap Soviet IC's /cry

@@dodgydruid Soviet electronic watches are quite reliable and workable. In Belarus, electronic watches are still being produced in small batches.
