You could go back. After living in Germany for nearly 8 years, the quality of life is still like the 80s and 90s here. Most of the things spoken about children and education still exists. After leaving California my home of 32 years back in 2012, glad I was able to find my golden years but in a form of Deutsch-Bavarian Style. Whoever is interested in relocating to Germany, I am glad to assist. From what you dont here in the news, Germany cost of living to me is almost like in the 90s in terms of prices and income you make. Unlike California where now making 5k a month is considered poor, but in Germany...you live like a king!!

I turned 10 in 82. I love the weekends. We had a house right down the street south of Disneyland that our mom shared with her brother. There weren't too many kids in our neighborhood. So after cartoons were done. Off on my bike or Green Machine. Wonderful decade to grow up in. The 90s were my teenage years and that's a story all altogether different. Also, a wonderful decade.

THE GREEN MACHINE, the coolest and best big wheel ever….bar none! I would take that back seat rest of my standard big wheel so i could put one foot on the back and really get it going fast, did that up the driveway before and forgot the station wagon was there………also my dad was a mechanic and i asked him if he could get a real car steering wheel for my big wheel, dont remember how long it took him but that was special….didnt have the best thoughts about my dad growing up, times were tough with five of us kids in the house and not a ton of money but now that im older and a dad i look back and know my dad was a good dad and a good man!

I was born in 83 and I have memories of M.C Hammer and Alf, The California Raisins and Masters of the universe, Voltron and Thunder cats. My prime years though are the 90s, I have memories of the 80s but the 90s are the best decade I ever had and I would give almost anything to go back to 1990 and relive it all over again.

Other than the getting to be selective with Valentines and the peanut butter, I definitely relate to these experiences. The school I went to it was mandatory that everyone in the class give each other Valentines or be given invitations if handing them out at school and they banned all kinds of foods deemed "dangerous due to possible allergies" including peanut butter. The school was very conservative and traditional and the rules had been in place since the 1920s when the school was founded. Interestingly my niece ended up going to that school in the early 2000s (she just graduated high school earlier this year) and they finally changed the rules so that there weren't any ban foods and Valentines and invitations could be given by choice. So the school seems to continue being the opposite of what's happening elsewhere. LOL The find the bikes and you find all the kids thing...yeah that's definitely soooo true. Also if you knew which house had the swimming pool, the slip-n-slide, or the trampoline that's probably where the kids were during the summer. And in the late 1980s, the house with the Nintendo was the place to be in the fall and winter (until we all finally had one because our parents finally realized it wasn't just a quick fad that was going away). My dad ran his own business and my mom worked at a store in the mall, so my sister and I were often home alone a lot. We had a housekey and we definitely would just go hang out with friends around the neighborhood, at the park, or down by the creek until the street lights came on and then go home. Since mom worked at the mall...which had the arcade and movie theater in it and the bowling alley was just a walk down the street from....we'd usually go there on weekends and hang out with friends. Many of the people who worked in the mall as well as the managers of the mall knew us and so we didn't have to worry about calling collect when using the payphones. If any of our friends or us didn't have a quarter, we usually could go and ask someone and get one to call our parents to pick us up. My parents usually gave us $5 in quarters for the payphones (this was money seperate from arcade money). The reason was because it took three quarters to call (caller ID wasn't a thing either in the 1980s) using the established "ring code" we had to let our parents know it was us calling (likewise parents and grandparents had a "ring code" for us whenever they called home when we were there so we'd know to answer the phone). Our ring code to call home was to call and let it ring twice, hang up, call again let it ring once, hang up, then call and let it ring constantly. That's how our parents knew it was us calling. My parents would call and let it ring twice then hang up and call back and let it ring constantly. I'll admit I really liked when we got an answering machine because my parents would just say on the machine it was them and we'd pick up and vice versa we'd do the same. The reason we had the code was because a lot my dad's customers would sometimes call the house phone trying to reach him if they couldn't reach him at his business (I guess they never thought he might be busy and just call back later, not sure why they thought he'd be at home during business hours).

I was a latchkey kid. I had the whole house to myself from 2p - till about 6p. I had to prep dinner, preheat ovens, keep an eye on them till my parents got home. I remember i saved up my money to buy a cordless phone from a pawn shop. I used to marvel at being able to talk in my backyard on the phone like it was a cell phone!!

I turned 10 in 1980, so these were all of my formidable years. I love the Bed Bugs game in the one pic. I have no idea how I talked for hours to my friends every night on the phone and still had things to say. Our phone cord was at least 10 feet long! Our 1st computer had 2 floppy drives, 1 for the program and the other to save progress, no hard drive!! I remember when we got a 10 mb hard drive and thought we were the shit!! We didn't learn how to type on a keyboard either. It was in 7th grade typing class. P P P, S S S, Semi Semi Semi. I can still hear the teacher and the clacking. I grew up in Los Angeles. The best was watching Tom Hadden (sp?) make a Popeye drawing from a squiggle on Saturday mornings...Lol.

I would spend a few hours on the phone, almost every night doing homework with them, and definitely to study together for a test the next day. And oh my goodness, when three-way calling came out, we would all network our calls and study as a group! (Then we would pretend to hang up and eavesdrop on the conversation that continued without us. 😇) We had our thing about taking turns asking questions that were on the test, and if you didn't know the answer, someone else would and then you'd remember it for the test! And of course, we would talk for hours as well about everything else. Making plans to look forward to doing on the weekend.

The packaging of candy and potato chips were papery back then. And the bottles... glass, all of them, return for refund - seems more sensible than trying to recycle impossible plastics. Toothpaste tubes were metal. Caulking tubes were cardboard. And so on.

Interesting video as always Rhetty. I was a 90's kid but remember alot of these things. I remember we didn't even get our first answering machine until 1999, and it was a used one that we found at a yard sale. My sister and I both had Huffy brand bikes. Which I don't know if those are still popular or not. When I was a kid it seemed like everyone had one. I remember watching my sister twirl the phone cord with her fingers while talking on the phone.

Did you or your sister ever call up a friend and do homework together over the phone? That was also a great time to twirl the phone cord around the finger, or sometimes just flip it like a rubber band. 😄

I graduated high school in 1980. I grew up in the Santa Cruz mountains and basically the only rule that my parents had was be at the dinner table at 6 PM on the nose, clean and ready to eat dinner… Our entire family didn’t hardly talk to each other we each had our own individual lives and at the time it was the regular thing. We had so much freedom. I used to hike up in the woods, build tree houses, and eventually drive my car like a bat out of hell through the windy roads of the Santa Cruz mountains… A whole different world these days…

I can still hear that dot matrix printer, used it all the way up into the 90s. One thing about that printer that you really can't do with modern home printers is making long banners out of multiple sheets of paper because they were all connected. People always asked me to make them because I knew all the fonts and characters you could use to decorate them with. So when someone made one for me, like at my graduation, it kinda looked like crap. Still appreciated it though.

alot of what was said in this video applies to us 90s kids as well, and the thing about stuff being packed with sugar and parents no caring, my mother did, she refused to buy me fruit snacks, as well as some cereals, regualr sodas (it was always the diet soda) and would very rarely buy cookies, Hi-C or little debbie cakes as she would always "it's just pure sugar!"
@julieerin115

My mom was the same way until a few weeks I was in the 2nd grade when she gave in after I persistently pointed out that all the other kids were having packaged snacks. I was allowed to bring one single snack to school such as a Wagon Wheel. Still wasn't allowed to have actual candy. Before that point, it was real fruit (lol!) such as peaches, apples...And at home, it was usually Special K/Shreddies/Cheerios and diet soda (hello aspartame). For Halloween, I had to empty out the entire contents of my bag for her to examine what to toss out (usually unwrapped items) and had to ration out my candy, which often meant it would last into the following year.

The merry go round was so much fun. If you knew someone who could really get it going you would be in business. They also had playgrounds built out of wood. I remember Valentine's Day in my Kindergarten class I handed out mad ball valentines to everyone.
