The old days when the markets that did not an early game would get the NFL today at 3:30 PM ET version of the NFL today. They would also update the early games and then go to the features that aired on the early (12:30 PM ET) NFL today. Sometime in the mid 1980's both networks stopped doing the 3:30 PM ET show and local stations had to fill til 4:00 ET when the late games started.

I had thought of Bart Starr as a coaching disaster, but it's true the Packers could not keep their players in Green Bay over the offseason. I guess when free agency hit around 1990 and teams had a lot of personnel turnover that didn't matter so much, so the Pack came back.

I'm sad that I was just a bit too young to appreciate how great a TV personality Phyllis George was. My earliest recollection of NFL football was when my dad explained to me that the 49ers were the closest team to us, and were going to be one of the "Cinderella teams" (with the Bengals) that would be in the Super Bowl for the 1981 season, and how that was a "big deal" because the 49ers had never been there -- and of course, this clip shows the beginning of that, before I was even aware of what was going on. It is obvious in this clip why she won Miss America -- she's got that beauty and charisma -- and it is combined with real knowledge and confidence in talking about football -- along with what I (as a man) salute as a "wholesome sexiness" -- Irv Cross and Brent Musburger are visibly spellbound and impressed by her. The closest comparison to her now I'd say is Kay Adams on GMFB (who I also think is great), but I'd rank Phyllis George in a higher tier. I'm truly saddened that I wasn't watching football in the late 70's and early 80's when she was a centerpiece of The NFL Today, and old enough to appreciate what a sexy smile and confidence she had.

Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and the rest of the Monday Night broadcasting team were incredibly focused on the game and the plays. Interesting they mention how the 49ers felt about their defense before anybody could see what was coming. What changed in 1981 when they went from 6-10 to starting their long run at the top was drafting Lott, Williamson and Wright, all of whom started in the secondary, and then trading for Hall of Fame pass rusher Fred Dean after the 4th or 5th game. Suddenly, they had a great defense for dealing with an increasingly pass-happy NFL. When the 1994 49ers got over the hump, it wasn't just Steve Young having one of the best seasons a QB ever had -- the defense ranked No. 1 and had Defensive POY Deion Sanders.

They were the gold standard of pregame shows. The best of all time. Nobody since has come close. They try to copy them but fail badly. The interviews done today are nice but that was Phyllis George 40 years ago. She created that style. They even won an Emmy together. Why didn't it last longer? Well, Phyllis left in 1978 to host a new show called "People" after the magazine and was replaced by Jayne Kennedy who was replaced by Phyllis George in 1980. She stayed through 1984. Edit: She left on maternity leave midway through the 1983 season. She was replaced by Charlsie Cantey. I do believe she came back for 1984 but her position was ultimately eliminated and she didn't return after that. In looking some more, I'm not sure she finished the '84 season. I've looked online and I can find her on The NFL Today in the early weeks but I'm thinking she moved on the News midway through that season and never came back to sports. In 1985 CBS News picked her instead of a qualified journalist to be the new co-host for the Morning News. That didn't work. She embarrassed herself in one particularly bad interview which was sad because she hadn't done that on The NFL Today. She resigned 8 months into a 3 year deal. It seemed that she was tired of the early mornings and just wanted to stay at home in Kentucky for a while so that was it. Edit: I did find some reports that her husband was going to run for governor again and that's why she quit. In any case, they were great while they lasted.

@Harry Engel in 1989, they went 10-6 and beat the Dallas Cowboys in the final Sunday of the 1989 season.

It wasn't all bad. I remember them blowing that game against Atlanta. But the Packers finished 8-8 in 1981, and would've made the playoffs with a win in the final game. Unfortunately, the Jets sacked Dickey 9 times that day. The 1982 Packers were good. Unfortunately, the regular season was only 9 games due to the strike. The Packers did win a playoff game against St. Louis before losing to Dallas (6-4-1 overall). The 1983 Packers were 8-8, which got Starr fired. Forrest Gregg coached the 1984 Packers to an 8-8 record, and was 8-8 once again in 1985. Dickey, Lofton, Jefferson, and Coffman were fun to watch in the 1980s. Dickey was the Packers' first 4,000-yard passer in 1983 and held the Packers' single season passing yardage record until Rodgers broke it in 2011. 1986-88 were really bad years, though. The 1989 Packers were 10-6.
