Most electronically-switched chorus pedals simply *cancel* the chorus sound by blocking the delay path with an FET, rather than bypassing anything. When the effect is disengaged, you only hear the dry sound and not the wet (because it is blocked). Technically, it could be converted to produce vibrato, by lifting one end of the resistor that carries the dry signal to the point where wet and dry are mixed, but when you go to cancel the effect, you wouldn't hear anything at all. By providing separate output jacks for the wet and dry, the CE-3 allows for vibrato out of one jack. All you have to do is insert a plug into one output jack, and use the other output for foot-switchable vibrato that reverts back to clean/dry when the footswitch is engaged. Neat trick. If you wanted a neat trick, you could make a separate switchbox that selected between the two outputs in Mode II to provide an output that is either sum OR difference chorus effects. Naturally they each revert to dry only in bypass mode.

I never used a CE-3 but i have to say that it sounds really good. I love boutique effects BUT, to be totally honest, when it comes to modulations (chorus, flanger, vibrato) i prefer Boss pedals. They just have THAT sound that always fit in every situation. So to me, Boss is the Boss of modulation pedals.

I totally agree. To me, modulation is an "add on" to my guitar sound - it doesn't form my core sound - and I too have found Boss modulation pedals to be incomparable.

First Boss pedal I owned, been on off it over the years, a bit noisy with some drives, little bit of volume drop and bass cut. I now use it in a split signal for bass, it has something my other choruses don't. Possibly was used on the bass for Passion by Rod Stewart.

Great demo, thanks Joe! So is the Dimension C still your favorite Boss Chorus? And if you had to choose between a CE-2 and a CE-3 soundwise in mono, which do you prefer? I was hoping for a recap at the end where you give your insights. I know it's subjective, but I trust your ears. Cheers!

Cool pedal. You can still find them for about $165.00USD . I can remember around 80 to 83 I was working part time at a shop and going between the Boss and the Ibanez CS-505 for days. In the end I got the Ibanez. Today was a A/DA PBF Flanger day. I've had it along time some nice guy called Joe Perkins gave me all his good settings. LOL Oddly enough they are hard to get at the moment. Sooo I put mine on Reverb. If I get my priceI will get the Retro Sonic that Joe also loves....if not I will carry on with the A/DA. ______________________________________________________________________________ It is now 8 hours later after saying the above. The A/DA has already sold and the Retro-Sonic is ordered.

@@g.marion5888 No...ignore the colour. The Re-isse Nux is their take on a Boss CH-3 When Nux started they did the NUX CH-3 Chorus. Every few years they dropped one whole line of pedals and did another. Up to a year ago they still made that NUX CH-3 which was odd because it did not match any pedal they made. Too bad it is a killer I have the Ibanez Chorus and the NUX CH-3. I use both but I actually prefer the NUX CH-3. I once bought a Strymon so I sold the NUX CH-3. Two years later I sold the Strymon and bought another NUX CH-3 .LOL But it did not hurt much. Both cost me $35.00 USD the damn things are built like a tank too. If you want a bargain the NUX re-issue Analog Delay is an Ibanez AD-80 ...for real!!! They even put the same two Panasonic chips in it. It holds it's own with nearly everything out there and it is only $60.00 USD. It is a nobrainer buy for a basic analog delay. Speaking of the NUX reissues. They make the Plexi Crunch. I have a collection 14 Marshall-in-a-Box pedals with number 15 on it's way. Most are around $350.00 USD each. The damn NUX is just as good. No bull it is a bullet proof buy !!!

Go figure ??? In less then 24 hours my A/DA was sold. The Retro-Sonic is on it's way. AND ...my bank account has remained unchanged . Good luck with the book. I had a my own issues for a few years. I stayed reclusive and never ventured outside in the day. I only went out late at night. I lived in the center of a large city but beside a ravine where no one ever traveled at night. The short story is I now can cope stress free even any environment. You could ask me to speak to a thousand people and I would simply become a rehearsed actor and play my role. It is the same if it is a group of 3 or a single person. But the second I am left alone even in a crowd I feel all but invisible and in my own world. I am aware of my personal reality so I have no anxiety. If anything I feel bullet proof from any social challenge. I feel most people are being controlled by the culture they live in and are in fear of banishment from it if they break it's unspoken rules. They actually want to be told what to think and how to feel. I can see why someone like Hitler took over a whole nation.

im not a huge chorus guy, recently sold my analog man chorus and got a Mooer chorus. Im actually much happier with the cheap Mooer than with the fancy A.M. and I play it a lot more hahahaha. Its funny how "guilt" can play a role in your playing and your tone. Somehow never felt my use of chorus was worth the AM pedal, but now im much happier playing the Mooer and chorus might become a strong effect for me!

I own a CE-3 and while it's a very nice sounding chorus I hardly ever use it. I use an analog CH-1 instead. why? because the CE-3's buffer is either real bad or I have a defective unit. Just having it in the signal chain reduces the signal level by about 30%, put the slight volume drop when the effect is engaged on top of that and that's quite a severe amount of signal loss. No such problem on the CH-1. (Yes, I am aware of the ACA power and powering the pedal correctly).
@silviolutti1522

Rest assured, your ce-3 pedal isn't faulty - they're all like that. They sound bad, indeed very bad both in Bypass and when switched on. My advice is to remove both and to take, perhaps used, a Boss ce-2 Waza craft: truly spectacular pedal, with three modes. With the ce-2 waza craft, you won't need any other pedal in your pedalboard for modulation.

Doesn’t sound like the gang feels the love of that buffer, any ideas. I’m looking for a good analog chorus but the DC and AM chorus are a bit pricy, and I need two. I prowl. For used boss often, thanks for filling me in on this option. Comments like the CE-2w, seems like a solid shout too.

Get the analogman bi-chorus. Its only a little more than the standard pedal and you get 2 in one box instead of two separate pedal. Plus, you can run them at higher voltages as well. I run mine at 12 volts. Really opens it up.

Inspired by your video, I've decided to buy a CE-3. Will settle for using a battery, but I may try to the mod for converting it to take a 9v power supply.

If you can find a GigRig "ACAAOK" adaptor, that takes a 9v supply and converts it to ACA 12V. Failing that, I _believe_ any 12V supply will work (but don't quote me on that..double check before you plug anything in!) or just run it on a battery in the compartment. Definitely worth experimenting with modding though if you're happy to do that - from what I've heard it's not a hard mod; just snipping a resistor or something similar.

How does this work out for recording in stereo because of the phase flipping? Does it cause phase issues if you run it into two different amps recorded at the same time?
@JoePerkinsMusic
Жыл бұрын
It only flips the phase of the wet element of the signal - not the dry - so the core amp sounds will be in phase still....but the wet elements being out of phase is what creates the huge spacial tone.

It's a perfectly serviceable $50 chorus pedal. Mine had a lot of noise, yours doesn't seem to. It's not very inspiring to me. But the biggest flaw is that you can't see the LED from where you would typically stand, as your video demonstrates. It's one of only 2 BOSS compact pedals to have the "three in a row" knob layout, that was not the greatest.

I wouldn't want to contradict you, but the ce-3 is really bad as a chorus. Nothing to do with the previous ce-2. And it has a very bad buffer that sucks your tone and also the volume of your guitar. Personally I recently bought a used Boss ce-2 waza craft but in like new condition. Truly spectacular pedal, three modes (ce-2 / ce-1 / vibrato), Stereo mode and has a really cool buffer. Highly recommended!
