WOW!!! This is SO COOL to see this again. I was 19 years old when this happened. I haven't seen this telecast since I saw it live the day it happened. Than you soooo much for this.

Even though we didn't get any qualifying runs, these broadcasts are a fantastic view of what was going on in the sport at the time. Some of the commercials are a bit cringeworthy, especially the one for spark plugs with the Japanese mechanic, would probably not be broadcast these days with the over the top accent lol

Were these qualifying shows aired live, or was it tape delayed like the race itself was back then?

Days gone by. Now the big teams have to enter two or three extra cars with mediocre drivers in them to just get 33 starters.

Well Chip Ganassi Josele Garza Pete Hasmer , etc. we’re not exactly household names. And others like the Whittingtons bought their way in.

The overall talent of the drivers today is much higher than it’s ever been. Not only that, the competition is much better.

@@landoflogic107 The talent is more EQUAL. NOT better. This era was far and away the best era of American open wheel drivers. The 500 has always padded the field with pay cars. Spec series is perfect for today's 'participation trophy' 'you did your best, you're a WINNER!' society. There are great divers today, vets Dixon Power Helio Kanaan and young guys like Herta O'Ward and I think Malukas is going to be an ace but overall to say they're better than Andretti (and son), Mears, Johncock, the Unser bros and Jr, Sneva, Rutherford, Sullivan, the brilliance of Mansell in '93 etc. is ridiculous IMHO. And the public interest in microscopic compared to where it used to be. These guys were superstars and each circuit was packed for each event. Watching Power win this year's title (and take the pole leadership from Mario) at Laguna Seca in front of almost nobody was a total embarrassment, as are the barely half full stands everywhere except Indy. And it's great racing I agree but a pale shadow of what it was in it's heyday late 70's-'94. Sorry for the TLDR lol.
