This was a clip shown originally in November of 1983 featuring Billy Idol and his move to New York. He talks about the differences between England and the US.
He's gorgeous then and gorgeous now. He's very intelligent and obviously must have great self control in having kept himself in his 60s so alive and well and looking great.

"You can get soft and easy when you're used to any kind of system you're in, so it's kind of great to break away from it." That was quite profound at 4:00 minutes in. I can identify with what Billy said there ... many people choose at that point to make easy living, and while there's nothing significantly wrong with that, you know - putting food on the table and paying bills, there is something inherently wrong with it - like you trade authenticity for security, or exchange pain for pleasure, because you risk nothing, so you become nothing, or not much - in the creative sense. The more I hear this guy (only recently) the more I realise he actually has something to say, like something worth hearing. He keeps up with th interviewer and is in control the whole time - why - because he don't gotta makes stuff up - it's what he has inside that enables him to deliver.

Billy Idol is the Elvis Presley of punk rock. He embodies the rebellious and fearless spirit of late 70s punk mixed with the magnetic dancing performances of the mid 50s rock n’ roll era. The fact that he chose Steve Stevens as his guitarist also gave him a melodic heavy metal/hard rock edge. This unique combination of styles contributed to his success and authenticity.
@alukuhito
2 жыл бұрын
Well, that's the image he was going for, so him and his fans would probably like that comment. Not sure if anyone else would agree though. Elvis was a pioneer, bringing black music to a white audience. I wouldn't say that Billy Idol did the same thing for punk. Punk was already going on in the US with the Ramones and others, and they weren't black. Definitely, it was a combination of different types of music and his look, along with jumping on the music video bandwagon that helped propel his music to the forefront of suburban white teenaged English-speakers of the early 80s. He was very much of his age, basically forgotten by the end of that decade, and no good music made since.

You are totally right. Well off upbringing. They all skip over it. Talking about Class struggles is easy. If you ignore your own childhood comforts.
