I love the vintage shots of you and Wayne Kady back in the early 1980's in that group huddle. I wish you would post more videos like this of any that might have the later year Cadillac Cimarrons specifically the 1987-1988 refresh. You were kind enough to reply to my comment over on Adam Wades KZitem channel so i came over to see what content you might have under your name.

John is it possible to buy copies of your sketch designs? In particular the 2 door Cimmaron that is very similar to my 87 Allanté. Thank you for all of your work love my Allanté and my 94 Seville STS.

Thanks for posting this video. To see what was being said back in 1983, or 38 years ago about cars, is an eye opening experience. For instance, the emphasis on noting McPherson struts at the front, and a rear suspension without a need to operate around the rear drive axle.

I had no idea they were equipped with manual transmissions (:50). That's contradicts Cadillac's 'power everything' motto.

Wonder what the admittedly talented designers in the video (one of whom was a Cadillac studio chief, the other the lead designer for the C5 Corvette) thought of their work on the Cimarron.

awadecki I keep wondering how much "work" they had to do. Was it not essentially a matter of "Ok, see that Cavalier? Stick a hood ornament on it and some Cadillac badges down the side, tart up the interior with some "pleather" and put an outrageous sticker in the window"? It's not like they had to sculpt clay for months to come up with a radical new design. I think the guys sitting around talking are saying something along the lines of "There's no way anyone I know will ever see me in this, right?" I think that's the first time I have ever seen a robot blush...even they were embarrassed to be building them. GM tried to get Ricardo Montalban to do ads for this car but he refused, so they asked Herve Villechaise to do it. He agreed, but while filming the ad whenever the car appeared he would point at it and shout, "the crap, the crap".

John, thanks for sharing this video. Did the Cadillac Design Studio do any Cimarron Sketches on the GM X Body Compact Sedan (before corporate brass killed the idea because of lack of added X body production capability)? If so, could you please share them with us?
@dznr723

No, the decision was J car and no other options. The timeline was so constrained, and the J car was the newest platform over the X bodies.kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Yew2WGYbqCqimk

As I know, J-body based on european GM-Opel Ascona II. How many differences between european and american embodiments ? I mean, maybe some spare parts (e.g. suspension, electrics) are unitized with other american cars (Nova, Citation, Chevette etc.). ?

'distinctive Cadillac look' my ass LOL... can you imagine how often they had to stop the tape during recording when the announcer would screw up from laughing so much? This sure shows you how easily GM thought they could bamboozle their luxury buyers.

im not trying to argue with anyone the cimarron didnt make much sense but i reallly did just pick one up today an 82 grey on grey in good shape with 117k probably the slowest car ive driven but the ride and steering are far from cavalier and once you look one over in person it is a cadillac but i admit not worth the premium over a cavalier just a good little car i got mine for $750 and drove it home!

I'm sure the car has different spring rates, a different steering rack and more sound insulation than a Cavalier which is why it drives different. It probably should have been sold as an up model Cavalier for $750 over a standard one vs. as a Cadillac.

it was distinctively cavalier. the were an OK car but they were a bad cadillac. in other words people bought cadillacs because they wanted more in a car then cavalier could offer. the jbody was a good platform for chevy and pontiac but should have never been used on a cadillac

It was too much the Cavalier. It looked like the Cavalier inside and out. The material quality was the same as Cavalier. Basing a luxury car on an economy car was the first mistake. Doing little (or nothing) to the appearance and performance exacerbated that. Essentially, it was a Cavalier with leather and the Cadillac emblem. Jump 30 years ahead and GM is doing it again, but significantly better. The Buick Verano based on the Chevy Cruze.

If only it had been that simple. We knew at the time it wasn't the right thing to do, but everyone at Cadillac was scared to death of the energy crisis and the cost of fuel. The Cimsrron was a panic decision to help the dealers stay in business. In the end it did more damage than good.

I could make the front end in fiberglass and make a Cimarron in my garage out of a Cavalier!
@RockandrollNegro

I did that actually. My '83 Cavalier got wrecked, so I replaced the front clip and the rear taillights with the front and rear of a Cimarron. In a way it was better than the Cimarron because it wasn't loaded down with all the weight that the Cadillac had riding on it, and people actually thought it was a Cadillac.

I had an '84 Cimarron and it was my first car back in 94. My car was dark blue exterior over blue interior. Nice car at the time but the engine performance was awful. However, like the car.

This car almost killed the Cadillac brand. Cadillac's version of the Edsel. The next small Cadillac car, the Catera did only slightly better but was still a disaster. Cadillac's newest small car, the ATS is worlds better than the Cimmaron and worth buying.
