the 4.0 block swaps in where the 4.2 sat without any work if I remember correctly. It's been years now though. And I ended up putting a carb on the 4.0, I don't remember if I used the 4.2 intake on it or just pulled off the throttle body and installed a carb on the 4.0 intake. Either way I would not put a 4.0 in a 4.2 jeep ever again. The 4.0 was pretty under powered feeling with less torque at the lower end. It could rev out easier and still drove well, but the bottom end power was affected for the worse. You'd might consider regearing if you go that route.

Definitely, but if you only live in Russland❤ Simple to go with carburetor, than stay in a wild forest trying to do something with that electronic "ecu"... With renix or mopar injection system you might have a crank, spark, fuel, crankshaft position sensor is ok, map sensor, but it won't start at all. It is so expensive to drive an original xj in Russia! Damn it's сostly!🤪

I did this same swap, and used the cj7 rack with the 4.0 power steering pump. Having issues blowing out the pressure line when i make a tight turn. You had no issues with this setup?

He Probably used the factory 258 AMC ones ( the 4.0 is literally the same engine just with improvements)

wouldn't suggest it, the 4.0 lacks the torque the original 4.2 has. It is not a well matched engine for the chassis. its got better hp, and it likes to rev more. But the gearing on the CJ is low reving ideal for an engine thats lower reving and has plenty of torque. After doing this swap I wished I would've just rebuilt the original.

I used a MotorCraft 2150 carburetor, those are similar just about the same as what came on the Grand Wagoneers back in the 80's

it looks like an older 4.0L intake manifold and the injector holes were tapped and plugged with pipe plugs

How did you wire the altinator I'm doing this swap soon to my 87 but not sure how to wire the 4.0 altinator without the computer

What I ended up doing is taking the alternator to be rebuilt and getting an internal regulator installed so it could work as a 2 wire setup.

it was the 4.0 intake gasket with the 4.0 intake and exhaust manifold

Hey u wouldn't happen to remember what size jets u was running in ur carb would u ? U running the 2150 right

Sure I remember, they were size 48. It was running a little rich so I went down to 45 or 46. But it'll run good with any of those, just have to get it tuned the way it wants. I always seemed to dump a little too much gas just off idle and that's all. Almost as if the accelerator pump was working too well.

+David Senn what 2150 1.08 or 1.21 lol I'm running the 2150 1.21 and it still acting like its stumbling off of idle like it wasn't getting enough gas I had to up the jets which helped from 56 to 58 and about to go to a 60 I was thinking that's a awful insane size but it moved the stumble from 1500-2000 to 1000 at idle now

i had the 1.08 MC 2150 on mine. and i could tell i was getting too much gas cause i would puff some black smoke whenever i came off idle a little too aggressively. and the engine was a early 4.0, the Renix $.0 from 1990, they had different heads than the HO version i believe.

+David Senn awwwww that could be where the difference is , I'm running the 99xj HO and it was running lean I plan on putting in some bigger jets in the next couple of days to see what happens , I appreciate all ur help 🙌 I'll keep u updated lol if it helps lol

cool! it definitely helped mine changing jets but it never got rid of the problem completely, though after i was done tinkering with it no one could tell that there really was that problem and chalked it up to being carbureted. that being said there wasn't any problem to really speak of after that. It just bugged me until the day i sold the jeep. Oh and it was mainly noticeable when the engine was cold, at least from what i remember from when i sold it last year.
