Los Angeles Olympics 1984 rowing mens eights final
A 7 boat final (France had suffered an equipment problem in the repechage and were allowed into the final)
Lane 1 New Zealand
Lane 2 USA
Lane 3 Canada
Lane 4 Australia
Lane 5 Great Britain
Lane 6 Chile
Lane 7 France
If you interested in tactics this New Zealand crew had won the world champs for the last two years with a big move in the third 500m. (both races can be seen on this channel MostynARC) They did the same to Canada in the heat (also on MostynARC) and despite everybody knowing its going to happen, the other crews cant seem to counter it. Canada had won in Lucerne beating amongst others East Germany but New Zealand weren't at Lucerne.
Canada go for a good lead before 1000m, then watch what happens (or doesnt for some crews) in the 3rd 500m
Then watch USA in the last 250m
This was recorded from BBC coverage with Gerald Sinstadt commentating (he normally covered football). The house I was living in during the summer of 1984 had variable, but often pretty poor TV reception. Unfortunately the day of the mens finals was one of the poorer days for reception and then it's been on a VHS tape for 29 years before I reformatted it (hence the poor quality).
