The thing that people don't seem to get is that this was that one chance to finish in an Olympic race she never thought she'd get. Up until that point, these women couldn't run at the Olympics because the world had made up its mind that women were to weak to do marathons. Getting to prove the world wrong at age 39, I'd want to finish, too. Amazing moment in history.

Women had already been running marathons before this, it just wasn't recognized as an Olympic event until 1984. Full respect to this woman she could have collapsed at any moment but took that risk to honor her country and the games. In the spirit of competition when you give 110% you never loose.

with tokio 2020 about to finish, this proves once again that for all this competitors is more than just winning a medal, it is about pride and all the suffering and months of training, this woman became a legend that day in 1984, with all due respect to joan benoit, who won the race, but gabriela stole the show with her courage in this one. Well remembered just as derek redmond during the barcelona 92 games who got the pop of the games after finishing the race alongside his dad helping him to finish what he went to do after he got injured
