Thanks for sharing this! I mainly work on 4 stroke quads and my newest project is a 1985 Honda CB700SC Nighthawk S that I am tearing down to completely rebuild. You have given me some great knowledge and reference ... thanks again for your time to edit and share this ...

Thanks for posting, great information, I have an 85 650 Nighthawk with a seized engine, last owner let it sit outside for a few years and like a dummy I bought it. I may end up doing the same thing if I can't get it free with just some penetrating oil, Marvel Mystery Oil for the win !

RE: Can chain sprocket bolts. I used a 1/4" Black and Decker electric impact wrench, an extension a nd a 6 point 10 MM socket. It took some "rattling". But they did loosen off.

Hey fyi you take the carburetors out by taking the back wheel off and removing the airbox. I removed mine the first time the same way you did and I can say it's a pain. I was wondering if you knew how to take the whole engine off and how I would go about doing that? I have the cb700sc variant of the cb750sc. I broke an oil pan bolt and need to either lift the motorcycle up and use a regular drill to extract it, but I'd feel more comfortable using my drill press. Any help at all would be much appreciated. This is my first bike and I've already learned a ton.

Cam chain tensioner. Did you remove the engine mount bolts and rest the engine on the frame like the manual suggests to get the forward 2 bolts? The rear 2 bolts were simple the forward bolts are so close to the case I can't get a socket or wrench on them.

Hi Seth! Is it the cam chain tensioner bolts you are having trouble with? I can't remember having any difficulty other then the standard grief we all face! HAHA! Can you email me a picture to wfvs@sasktel.net?

@@wfvs1500 so i wound up heating a 10mm open end wrench and putting a 90 bend on it. Did the trick. Couple hours of playing with it first. Great news. 37k miles and firm crank bearings!! Time to clean and collect parts! Thank you for responding and thank you for the videos. They've been helpful.

Where is Part 2 ? I have an 83 Nighthawk 550SC with a similar ticking noise, and the factory service manual arrived yesterday. Would be interested in hearing / seeing your results upon re-assembly. Thanks for the vid!!

It runs great but still has a bit of noise, cam chain rattle I presume? How is your project coming alang?
@DigitalJeremy

Haven't opened it up yet, but I've reason to believe it could be valve-related. It has some ticking from the left-most cylinder, front outside corner. When it started it would come and go, but now it's constant. I've heard the cam chain glide can make a similar noise, but this ticking is nowhere near the cam chain :(

Hi Jacob, I seem to remember I ordered them from Honda Canada, they still had stock. It seems to me there were more 700's so maybe they ran out?? Oh well keep looking, there must be some out there somewhere. Good Luck!

Hi Dan. Boy, I don't really remember, but probably 10 or 12mm. I have accumulated guite a selection of puller/pushers from the vintage snowmobile business...

WFVS WFVS Yes I had a copyright issue with the intro music I used for episode 2. When I tried to correct the issue You Tube wouldn't allow me to upload it. Sorry, it just showed details on the teardown and stuff!

Can you ride with that ticking noise or would it be engine suicide?
@wfvs1500

I'm not sure I would want to ride it too far, I guess it depends on how severe the rattle is?

WFVS The rattles about the same as the one in the video. Just came out of nowhere the other morning when I started it up. I wasn’t planning on riding it until it gets sorted out, was just curious.

Hi Johny: Sorry I sold the farm, and hence sold the bike, a while ago. It didn't have many miles on it. I miss it desparatly!

You should have replaced the cam chain tensioner while you were in there as these wear and then you've got another noise to deal with.

Actually I've bought a complete parts bike. It turns out that my #2 crankshaft pin was worn bad, hence a no good crank. I'll pick out the best cam chain tensioner of the two, put in a new spring, install new cam chain, new alternator chain, an un broken alternator chain tensioner etc etc etc etc etc..........

Thanks for the info. Congratulations on getting the bike running properly at the end of part 6 (after all the challenges you faced, including Frankenbiking it with the other engine).
