You’ve heard them all a million times or more. The most overplayed songs of the 80s. Not only did they flood the radio airwaves back in the day, but since the neon decade they have conquered pop culture media, getting played again and again in movies and television shows. I’m talking about tracks like Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer’s and TOTO’s Africa But for today’s episode I want to give 6 songs that are just as good and truly under-appreciated. They made their mark on the 80s. But they’ve been missing in action since but that doesn’t mean they aren’t outstanding. We’ve got some real killers here. One hit song where Van Halen forgot to credit a legendary writer… one that was produced by an iconic member of Pink Floyd, and 1 that might be the most chilling top 10 hit ever. Coming up I’m going to count ‘em down for you. See if you remember these classics and agree with my picks… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Back when I first started this channel I used to feature a program called 80s hidden gems. Does any early viewers remember that one? Well Today I’m returning to that in a way… I’ve got a special countdown for you. I’m going to give you my Top 6 songs from the 80s that I believe should be the next classics of the decade. They ought to give the vastly overplayed hits from the 80s a little rest You know what I’m talking about… Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer, Van Halen’s Jump, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ and Toto’s Africa. Forty years later, we hear theses songs more than we did then and they are some of my favorites ever. But man very overplayed. Today I’m going to give you six songs that are hidden gems of the neon decade and definitely underplayed and deserve some time in the spotlight. So let’s get this countdown started. My criteria here is that they had to be a hit in their day…
But I do allow myself one mulligan, for a song that should’ve been a hit. Let’s get started:
Coming in at #6, I’ve got one of the most magical songs of the 80s, One that was produced by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd: It’s Life in a Northern Town by The Dream Academy. The Dream Academy was a British band comprised of singer-songwriter-guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes, keyboardist Gilbert Gabriel, and multi-instrumentalist Kate St John. Formed in 1983 the band released their self-titled debut album in November 1985.
Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour actually helped produce this Dream Academy album with Laird-Clowes… elevating the sound of the British trio to new heights. I mean, if you’ve got David Gilmour in your corner, you know it's going to epic. The album features grand orchestrations, ethereal choir-like backing vocals, and contemporary synths, all of which you can heard in the LP’s lead-off single Life in a Northern Town. Nick Laird-Clowes and Gilbert Gabriel penned this track as a tribute to the late singer Nick Drake who tragically...
