This Poma fixed grip quad was installed in 1986 to replace a Heron double chair. It ran up the right side of the mountain serving the snow bowl trail pod. Although the trails can be accessed from the gondola, it was much more efficient to lap the trails using this quad. In the summer of 2018, it was replaced with a new Doppelmayr detachable quad with a slightly different top terminal location. The new lift fixed a lot of issues that the original quad had. These issues included common wind holds, a long 12 minute ride time, and enormous lines at both the Gondola and the Ursa Express due to them being the only easily accessible detachable lifts to the summit. I have not skied at Stratton since the installation of the detachable but I have heard that lines at Ursa and the Gondola have been greatly reduced.
Snow Bowl used a Poma Alpha drive with hydraulic tensioning, 1st generation Arceaux carriers, spoked Poma sheaves, early 80s style lifting frames, and a simple top fixed return. Capacity was 2000 p/h with a design speed of 550 FPM although it ran much slower which certainly reduced capacity. Although the replacement of this lift was necessary, this lift was very special to me as I first rode it when I was 8 years old.
This lift is being installed during the summer of 2019 at Magic Mountain to replace a 1962 Pohlig double that was later converted to a triple. Hopefully, the new Black Line Quad at Magic will retain the same cool motor sound.
