The 85-86 Giants beat the 49ers in the NFC Wildcard game at Giants Stadium but lost the next week to the Bears in the Divisional at Chicago. The 84-85 Bears beat Washington in the divisional round at RFK Stadium but lost to the 49ers the next week in the NFC championship game at Candlestick Park. Which Giants and Bears teams are you talking about? The 1985/86 Bears won Super Bowl XX over your Patriots and the 1986/87 Giants won Super Bowl XXI beating the Broncos. Fact check me.

To many this is an insignificant game but to me it's an obscure classic. I was actually a Cardinals fan during this time period (1983-2001). As a matter of fact, I was probably their only fan on the East Coast (Baltimore MD). Lol. Seriously, all though they pretty much had losing records during the years that I followed them, they were definitely a talented team. Lomax was a two time Pro Bowler, Roy Green and JT. Smith were a very dangerous WR duo, Earl Ferrell and Stump Mitchell were a pretty good RB tandem, their O-Line had Luis Sharpe, Lance Smith, Derek Kennard, and Tootie Robbins. They had studs on defense too. Ken Harvey, Freddie Joe Nunn, Eric Hill, Lonnie Young, Tim McDonald, Leonard Smith, Aeneas Williams, and of course the late and great Pat Tillman. There's quite a few more awesome Cards players that I didn't mention from this time period but IMHO there's two things that kept them from being a winning team. First and foremost, they had one of the worst owners in sports history. Bill Bidwell, he was a complete jackass who could care less about the team and the city of ST. Louis. The only thing he worried about was lining his own pockets. Also, even though the Cards had talent back in the eighties and nineties, they were simply over matched. The were in the toughest division (NFC East), with the toughest teams (Giants, Cowboys, Redskins, and Eagles). Anyway, awesome upload. I forgot to mention another reason that I was a Cards fan back in the day. I absolutely loved their uniforms, especially these all-white unis with the red and black stripes. Absolutely sick...

They should definitely go back to these uniforms. No question St. Louis/Phoenix had talent but as you said that division was a nightmare. Of course, having a real home field was also an issue, one I'm all too familiar with being a Jet fan. Back then a true home field made a huge difference.

Maybe it's that I'm older now and it's all relative to your current age but at 43 now to see the opening and look back to 1963 in 86, 23 years earlier it looks like another world. But if in 2019 I look back to 23 years ago 1996 doesn't seem that different in comparison, sure things have changed but the drastic difference doesn't seem there.
@seanh9414

No Your right!! I say it all the time especially when I call into the sports station. These last twenty some odd years do not have the night and day difference that 20-25 years use to have! In fact, I consider 2000-2020 one decade. So much of the video and film looks the same. Th he school buses, teenage trucks, delivery trucks like the mail and UPS are exactly the same! Recorded music like POP/Rock and pretty much all the rest does not sound different especially when you hear the big difference between recorded music from 1963 and 1986!
@writerrad
4 жыл бұрын
Oh I think it all looks very different, of course 56-75 looks very different. The difference is when big TV money went into the NFL. However, athletically the current generation of players are miles ahead of the guys who played even in 86. In the Parcels era, the players themselves set up the teams fitness and weight trainning program with equipment players pooled together and bought starting with the defense, and hired a fitness and weight coach. Now not only does the team have it but most players have their own offseason weight training program and coach. In the era of this game THE GREAT GARY REASONS 55 had a unique off-season fitness program., HE WORKED ON A GARBAGE TRUCK FOR THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION IN THE OFF SEASON really different
@writerrad
4 жыл бұрын
One big difference is the amount of money players get now that several players strikes have gone on and free agency has been established. In the 50s the NFL did not play well except to a few star players. Most players except a few top stars had off season jobs or businesses to support themselves because the league did not pay that well. Andy Robustelli had his own sports store when he was a star D lineman in the 50s and 1960s BUT ASLO WHEN HE WAS BRIEFLY GM. The attraction to play in the NFL was not as strong, so a number of top college players didnt play in the NFL, and the NFL. Today the NFL is probably the most lucrative place for an athlete
