I was 8 when this happened. We were at West Edmonton mall and my parents saw how bad the weather was getting and decided we should drive home to try to beat the weather. There were no warnings at WEM or really on the radio either. We lived in millwoods. We got stuck on the whitmud on the way home. (Closer to millwoods than the west end) It was raining so hard and was so black out we couldn't see where we were or where others were either. We were lucky to make it home. I know now the tornado was right where we were..... Had there been proper warnings I'm sure my parents would not have taken the risk of driving home with 4 kids on the highway during a tornado! We had no clue it was even a tornado even while we pulled over into the black obis and extreme noise of rain and hail and whatever else banging on the small car we were in!!! We had the danger of the tornado that day but also being on a major highway where anyone could have hit us. I've never been through anything so scary. Storms still freak me out and I'm still afraid of another tornado. I watch for it every time there's a storm. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been traumatized by that day.

I remember that day well. Hot and muggy, will an almost black wall of clouds to the west of the city. I had to go from the westend industrial area to downtown for a root canal that day. About 2:30 I was near Coronation Park when tennisball sized hail started coming down(at home there was even larger hail balls). I was at the dentist when the Tornado did its worst. I had to go from 106st and jasper to 97st and 103 ave, normally a 10 minute drive, well that day it took over 1 1/2 hours. Later that night I was able to get past the roadblocks on the Sherwood Park Freeway, and went from 34 st east to 17st, the road and ditches were littered with twisted cars and trucks. One of my friends lost his aunt. A horrible day for Edmonton, but Edmontonians shone brightly, with their efforts, generosity, and kindness.

If a 🌪️ tornado that resembled the 1987, were to hit Edmonton Alberta today in 2023 again God for bid, is the city prepared if it were?

It’s now 2024 but with the way the weather and stuff has been I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened again! I think we’d be way more prepared for sure!

The fire chief Doug Harder at 1:34:31 was a family friend of ours growing up! We haven’t seen him in years but was told he passed of cancer last year 😢 also trying to see if I can see my dad at the tornado sites who was a constable of the Edmonton police department and was at work during the tornado.

Thanks for uploading 3 hours of this time capsule. As tragic as that day was it's interesting to see that the worst day of 1980's Edmonton was better than the best day of 2022 Edmonton.

How was 2022 worse than a deadly tornado in 1987? What happened?

@@ibelievethesecret80 Imagine the scenario of "if you boil the frog slow enough, it won't notice" across 5000 different areas. Gradual yet steady and intentional declines in quality of life across countless fields including careers and workplaces, company/corporate culture, vehicle design, housing, culture and the very foundation of society itself. It's only when you step back and look at the big picture you realize how far our world has fallen in such a short time. People born in the 1940s? Buy a new home for an inflation-adjusted $150,000 in a beautiful urban forest neighborhood, with a garage to park your 2 easily-affordable vehicles. People born in 2000? Pay $2000 a month to live in someone's renovated garage in a treeless neighborhood, get robbed 5 times walking to a bus stop because the price of driving has been artificially increased. Many such cases.

The next big tornado to hit Alberta after this was in pine lake campgrounds. I remember that I was supposed to go with friends and one of my friends father died and we decided not to go camping. Then the tornado hit a few days later and ripped through the area site we normally liked camping. It was so sad that my friends father died but we were so fortunate that we weren’t there when the tornado hit.

Wasn't as big but it was beefy. The Edmonton tornado was a F4 and the Pine Lake tornado was probably a F3 or a F2
