Man I was a huge Saints Fan and I thought we were going to the Superbowl that year(I was15) I was at that game and we got up early. Boy after what the Vikes did to us I was shocked they lost to the 49’s the nest week. Great NFL back in the late 80’s.

Saints had a solid team in 1987. However...

One of the most unexpected and historic thumpings in NFL Playoff history. I knew Minnesota was better than their record (even than the 8-4 they did sans the 0-3 strike replacement games), but obviously not *this* good.

The game changed when Kramer got injured. Special teams had a bad day to say the least

I think Minnesota's defense not only knew the Saints snap count, they knew what plays were coming. Example: After Brad Edelman's third holding penalty (still in the first half), check out the instant replay at the 52:20 mark of this video. Keith Millard times the snap count before the center even starts snapping the ball. Edelman didn't have any choice but to hold. The reason I mentioned they must have known the plays as well, b/c on the play before, which was a running play, Millard doesn't rush up field. He stands his ground, which is more effective in stopping a running play.

@@seancanova7396 I'll go back and look. You may well be right. For sure there was not this difference in the talent of the two teams.

@@brockgeorge777 I have another stat for you. Between 1987-1992, the Saints played exactly 100 games (counting the playoffs and not counting the strike games of '87). They were beaten by more than twenty points three times in those 100 games/six years. All three of those losses were by the Vikings (meaning the other 97 games the Saints either won or it was close). The Saints were doing something on offense (to use the poker term "a tell" or "showing their hand" b/c like you said, the Vikings were not 30pts better than them.

@@seancanova7396 Interesting. Without you pointing this possibility out, I would have seen this as purely a person head-to-head "matchup" problem. (E.g., teams A & B both seem to clobber teams C-Z equally effectively, but Team B always seems to beat Team A and usually clobbers them.) But in some of these cases, it may be a "proprietary" secret that Team B has picked up on that they keep exploiting.

29:09 Anthony Carter punt return TD and Hail Mary TD before the half 1:23:17

At first it looked like Anthony Carter just fell down on the Hail Mary, a bit of a fail perhaps. But when you take a closer look him running into the key defender made the play possible. Nudged him back just a bit so he couldn't make an effective play on Hassan. A.C. was a sly fox, always a difference maker.

A different time. I was 10 years old when this game was played. Was looking for it today because I randomly thought of the "Untimed Down" at the end of the 1st Half. We are spoiled now with the score and time on the clock being on the screen. This is a time when if you turned on the game, they might leave you guessing for a while what the score was, what quarter you are in, and how much time was left.

This is where the Saints ordained their playbook; from the Vikings; change quarterbacks. But this year, Sean Payton is going extra-tdickety. The center is going to hike the ball to himself, then throw the ball in the flat, to himself: then he's going to throw the ball down field, to himself; then, lateral the ball, to himself, and run the ball being blocked by. Himself, into the end zone. Seam Payron is also making witchdolls to trance the audience into believing the Daints are Superbowl Champs.
