Late 80s extreme skiing. Long skinny skis, colorful outfits, no hat but goggles. Has some Legends going down that Hill.

Watching the one dude's helmetless head come within 3" of the rock band as his body slams into it. It's amazing it took as long as it did for helmets to become the norm. When I got back into skiing in 2012, my girlfriend asked if I was going to wear a helmet and I laughed. We got to the mountain and I realized my mistake.

The first Saudan Couloir race was held in 1987 but the footage in the above clip is from the1991 invitational (a separate event from the races). Footage taken from Greg Stump's Groove Requiem in the Key of Ski.

Skiing terrain like that takes stones even today, but then take into account this was in the 80's, still several years before skis with radical sidecuts became the norm, and these turns become even more impressive. Watching this during COVID kinda sad... this event, everyone hanging out around the Couloir watching and partying; I hope someday it can happen again.

Absolute legends, and way ahead of the crap equipment with pure balls-to-the-wall bravado. With all that time in the back seat, I can see why onesies were the preferred kit back then. You're gonna spend a LOT of time in the snow.

If you told me you'd give me $2500 cash to huck that cliff in those conditions on those skis, I would politely ask you to keep your money.

40 years ago though, that's about $6800 in today's money. That said, you should try some skis like that sometime. Once you get em figured out they really do haul ass.

Doug F'n COOMBS- 'what would you define as extreme? 'Not this.' Yeah, this is a marked and graded run at a ski area, it's nothing special, except for being able to say one has skied its 35...ISH degree steep parts. It's a fun run, and this was a cool comp, but moreso because of its noteriety than it's difficulty... It's namesake, Sylvan Saudan (R.I.P. July 18) skied down Gasherbrum- 55 degrees, AVARAGE, for @3,000 meters, starting at 8k... Even COOMBS- would have found THAT 'extreme'.

I was sitting beside the judges watching that competition, and you can tell your friend that when his dad launched into the air to enter the course, we were right below and we just heard the crowd murmuring, we wondered where he was, then suddenly he sprang up into the sky right above us and appeared to clear the rocks. It was an amazing sight, and 30 years later your friend's dad had the most memorable run of the day, even if he didn't technically "win" the competition.

I'm a kid of the late 90s and early 2000s. Hate those long skis. I don't ride anything over 150. Don't have as much control in the flats, but it makes the moguls way. more. fun.
