Hey, I just got a 1987 Dodge Raider with the 2.6L and 5 speed. My grandpa had the motor rebuilt 12 years ago from a supposedly nice shop that did not do it right. Fuel pump went out 3 weeks ago and had my mechanic fix it then test drive it. He said that it blew the head gasket and the heads. Come to find out that the 10 bolt threads holding the heads onto the block were stripped and filled with paperclips. Crazy!!! Anyway it is getting properly rebuilt this time with some waterproof helicoils. I love this truck so much even if it takes 30 minutes to get up to highway speeds. Before the rebuild I had gotten it up to 65/70 mph going downhill. What is your top speed? Do you go on the interstate? Also, the AC does not turn off last time I ran it. I told my mechanic to fix it but I'm just wondering if it is normal for water to drip and frost to form on the Blackbox underneath the glovebox?
@anthonywatkins
2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, wow! sorry to hear about your head gasket fiasco. I rarely go on the freeway mainly because i don't want to chip my windshield...I just drive around town. Regarding the AC, the dash switch might be bad if it never shuts off. Also, there's a couple pressure switches that turn off the compressor if it's under charged or over-pressurized. I'm sure your mechanic can figure it out. The evaporator box should be insulated to reduce the condensation...it's the humidity that condensing and dripping.

Great video! I've watched all your videos and I really enjoy the work you have put into your raider/montero. I would look into the non jet heads they tend to last longer than the factory heads. Thanks for the update and keeping us fans posted on your builds.

I've had 4Runners ('86, '93), Jeeps (65, '90, '96) Troopers ('91, '01), and one Raider, and while the 4Runner was hands down the most reliable (22r), and very fun...the Raider was the most fun on the Trails in Colorado, until I experienced ALL the problems related to the motor's top end, and the motor fried. I still have it, but have no interest in putting the same motor back in , and most swaps don't appeal to me...unless i find a way to put a small block V-8 in it. So she sits. I may, however, seek out the rare 3.0 V-6 Montero Sport version ('88, '89). if I do, I will cut my '88 at the roofline behind the windshield, remove everything forward, and convert it into a camper. Great vlog series, reminds me how special these gems are.

Yeah, I plan to do a v8 swap myself at some point, I imagine it would be great to drive with all that extra power...in the mean time, the 2.6 is super easy to rebuild, and pretty cheap too. You should just fix it and drive it again.

Glad I found your videos! I’m possibly going to be picking up a 1987 montero 4cyl 2dr this weekend. They say it has a blown head gasket and is leaking coolant out of the engine. I’m going to go ahead and assume the head is cracked. Do you know where to find a replacement cylinder head? I’ve done some research but haven’t found much. Thank you.

Hey man, good luck with the new project. Google G54B head, a bunch will pop up. I’d look for a non-jet head, they tend to crack at the jets. There’s several on eBay for about $450.

I really enjoyed your build, glad you have another video to watch but also sorry it's because you're having problems! I've got the 3.0 that's burning some oil and noisy at startup for maybe 5 seconds, I wonder if those valves are adjustable too.
@anthonywatkins
3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I hear the 3.0 is a good engine. I haven’t worked on one, but I’m sure you have hydraulic lifters which wouldn’t need adjusting. They’re probably pumping up slow, or your timing chain tensioner is pumping up slow which is causing the rattle. I would google search the symptoms and see what forums pop up.
@irish44j

@@anthonywatkins is correct - the 3.0 has hydraulic lifters. That said, if the lifters are sticking, sometimes they make some noise until they get oil pressure.

Pull the trans apart and put calipers on the bearing, that’ll tell you for sure. If you truly can’t find the parts you need, look for another trans. I see them pop up on Facebook marketplace around here occasionally... Also, you should be able to measure the dimensions of your bearing-outside diameter, inside diameter, and width--then order one from a bearing supplier.

I had a 1987 2.6 with 5 speed. My tranny ate itself after a downshift going up a highway hill. Couple of teeth broken out of input shaft gear. Tranny shop did (they claim) an exhaustive search for parts with no luck. A “Montero guru” in the Phoenix area recommended a swap to automatic, said the autos in those are tougher than the 5speeds. I found a 4speed auto overdrive and did the swap. It worked ok, but my MPG on the road suffered. The auto tranny is all hydraulic (no electronics that govern function). Wiring on those montys can be a little odd at times, and I had a couple of minor issues, but it worked ok. Hopefully you can keep the manual, but a swap is another option (only slightly distasteful to me!).

Nice trick with the moving blanket for the hood replacement. Valves are nice and quiet. I have never been able to get good results on the first try adjusting valves. I have not done it too many times, and always seem to need a refresher. My folks had an '81 Reliant with the 2.6 Mitsu. Hemi. Is this the same engine? I could not make it enough from your shots of the head... apparently, the Reliant had that strange mini intake valve that would swirl the A/F mix in the cylinder after the main intake valve closed.

Hey man, if you’re running an aftermarket carb like the Weber...then run the vacuum from the lower port on the distributor to the manifold. Cap the port on the carb. If you’re running the original mikuni carb, then you’ll have to stay with the complicated vacuum setup from the factory

@anthonywatkins

Mikuni carb was stock. Super complicated for emissions purposes, not sure I’d recommend tackling it yourself. I know there’s a couple places you can send them off for a rebuild. The Weber works great, but will get worse gas mileage and won’t pass emissions if you live in a county that tests…

Hey man, yeah I forgot to record most of it. There's really not much to it...You'll pull the top shaft out and tap a ring blank into the hole which blocks the oil passage. Then you'll pull the oil pump and remove the shaft from it. You'll attach a small sprocket stud in place of the shaft, reattach the oil pump, and install the new smaller chain. Sure it can be done still in the truck, you'll have to drop the oil pan--just rest it on the axel, and you might have to remove the radiator, the shafts are kinda long and pull straight out the front. I'd actually recommend it...truck's a little peppier now.
