When Mark Martin's engine blows at 2:20:38, that to me is the most spectacular blown engine I can remember. That's stuck in my head for years. I was watching the race live when that happened!!! I have often described the event as the solid rocket boosters on the Shuttle igniting!

It was spectacular but in my opion it's the second words failed in a race.i think bobie Allison when he hit the catch fence at dega 87 his engine threw the whole crank out the bottom end of you watch the replay it picked the front of bobies car off the ground about foot then went under back tire an cut it an that's what made him fly an after that the crank comes down out of air an hit watrips car on the roll cage at top of windshield bobiez motor blew all to hell. So did marks . Alot of people don't no that bobie blew his motor is what caused the crash that brung on restrictor plate

Sadly, Dale Earnhardt winning this race and Rusty Wallace winning the championship were overshadowed by the death of Grant Adcox, who on lap 202, was fatally injured in a crash between turns 1 and 2 when his car hit the wall.

That place was rough on motors. Like as soon as you run it at certain RPM for extended periods and then you let off the gas, the engine lets go. Same thing with Mike Skinner in the 2000 spring race.

Everyone says they can't believe this was Rusty's 1 and only championship. Think if this, Mark Martin, just as successful as Rusty didn't win a championship. The rain Rusty only won 1 and Mark didn't win any? Because they had Earnhardt racing against them. If not for Dale, they both could have won 2 each. Possibly 3 for 1 and 2 for the other driver.

If Penske had been as stable in the 90's as they are today, Rusty would have won multiple championships with them. But in the 90's, Penske was inconsistent and breaking parts/blowing motors too often to contend for the title.

at 2:09:46, kind of a tasteless move by ESPN, plugging their "Hat of the Week" promotion while showing footage of Adcox's extrication. I doubt the production crew knew the specific severity of the crash, and switching to that camera could have been an honest mistake made in the TV truck. Still, when there's the potential that a driver may not live to tell the tale of his accident, you dont want to show too much footage of the aftermath, especially while shilling for a promotion.

To the post of Jeff Gordon: Jeff Gordon was lucky he had Ray Evernham and Rick Hendrick. Just like Jimmie Johnson has Chad Knaus and Hendrick. In my opinion, since the early '90s, the Cup Championship should be awarded to the crew chief.

Chris Kreager All the driver titles since about 1990 - maybe forever - should, in my opinion be awarded to the crew and or crew chief. The driver has a great deal of influence in the individual races and should get credit for those victories and top 5s or 10s but in the end, mechanical consistency is what wins Cups.

Actually, I think it's audience preoccupation with the drivers that makes people think only the driver wins the championship. Things like championship rings, etc., are awarded to the entire team, in fashion similar to World Series and Super Bowls, are they not?
@EricEbac22

I think that, as far as the championship is concerned, NASCAR needs to go back to the way things were prior to 2004, where, regardless of how many races a driver won, the driver who won a championship had more consistent finishes of tenth or better, as was the case in the years between 1949-2003.
