June 6, 1989 - In a rematch of the 1988 NBA Finals, the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers met once more, this time with the Pistons holding a decided upper hand. Starting Lakers guard Byron Scott succumbed to injury just prior to the start of the series while Magic Johnson sustained a hamstring injury in Game 2. That, alongside the Pistons' torrid run following the mid-season acquisition of Mark Aguirre, set the stage for a 4-0 Detroit sweep, yielding the first NBA championship in franchise history.
Special thanks to Hardwood and Hoops
