Man I wouldn’t make a habit out of switching fuel tanks while sitting at idle like that, only takes a little bit of air to get in the line to bite you in the ass. Especially with these older Fords I’d never switch tanks unless I was going down the road

@@dwightbest985 yeah I’m with you 100%, the nicest brick nose I ever had was a maroon 1989 F250 4x4 with a 7.3 and a ZF5, i bought it from the original owner who took great care of it. I had it for only a few months when I totaled it with 89k on the odometer. Twenty years later I’m still kicking myself in the ass over that one

It depends on the gearing, transmission and how hard you drive it....my 91 4x4 f250 7.3 idi on 33's can get 25mpg traveling a 150mile straight highway trip cross the state I do regularly. That's with the hubs unlocked and hotshots EDT in the diesel....with the hubs locked the MPG drops hard

I have a 1989 7.3L dually. Interstate driving, it gets 13 MPG. Tires are RSD 225/70/19.5. Edit: That's with a 4.10 final gear. It screams at 3,000 RPM doing only 65 MPH. I gotta change that back to the 3.55 final gear soon.

@@dwightbest985 I'm looking at one that was swapped into a 1992 f150 , z5 transmission and 3:55 gears, should be decent on fuel I'm thinking, I don't tow anything I just like diesels

A 7.3 is a truck to baby. Check the oil before starting it several times a day. Cuz if you don’t it’ll catch you off guard, & nearly kill itself. It can literally consume its own oil. They leak, & almost all of them should have the oil cooler rebuilt with new o-rings before it blows on you. If ur not mechanically inclined don’t own one. Get a gasser. Don’t expect to not put much Into it cuz by now all of these trucks need major work done to em. The gassers are better to daily without much work.

@michaelbenoit248 If a diesel starts randomly running on its own oil and isn't: -Turbocharged with a bad turbo, or; -a closed-loop scavenging 2-stroke... you have a very big problem.
