Yeah that was an amazing play. That doesn't happen if Eric Davis doesn't hustle over and back up Hatcher. Injuries dampened Davis' career but, man, he was fun to watch for those seasons in the late 80s and early 90s in Cincinnati. Well, I guess late 80s and then 1990, mainly. Eric Davis is the kind of star that comes along once every 25 years or so. Maybe even less often than that. He did things in those few years that were incredible.

And good to see old Daryl during the pregame. He and Bo we're my favorite non Reds back in thoae day. Almost got to see him play at Shea after he had joined the Dodgers. Summer 1991 we were visiting family in CT and the Dodgers were playing the Mets for the first time in New York since Strawberry and joined the Dodgers. It was spur of the moment. I told my parents about the game the day of or maybe day before and uncle called for tickets but it was sold out

The play that Eric Davis makes around the 2:12:00, mark is one of the greatest outfield assists in baseball history. I remember when Davis was doing things like that all the time. Injuries hampered his career but he was so fun to watch as a baseball fan. Players like Eric Davis, and plays like the assist he made in this game are a couple of the things that make baseball the greatest sport of them all. Eric Davis could play any sport, but you take a football or basketball player and put them on the diamond and they wouldn't have a prayer.

What year did they begin taking every pitch that went into the dirt out of play? Here if a pitch went into the dirt, I saw the catcher wipe it off on his pant leg and throw it back to the pitcher.
@jeelsvealnerve1163

I can't say the exact year, but it happened in the early 2000s I believe. MLB starting mixing diamond dry in with the infield dirt/clay. They did this so that the games could continue with significantly more rain than they had been able to do before as diamond dry is quite effective. The downside is, it's incredibly abrasive, so when the ball hits the dirt it invariably gets scuffed up and has to be taken out of play.

Vinton, Buck Apologize for Wayward Words : Baseball: Singer flubbed national anthem and sportscaster's remarks angered Polish community. articles.latimes.com/1990-10-11/sports/sp-3218_1_national-anthem October 11, 1990|From Associated Press PITTSBURGH - Bobby Vinton has apologized for flubbing "The Star-Spangled Banner" and CBS sportscaster Jack Buck also said he was sorry his on-air comments after the anthem angered Pittsburgh's Polish community. Buck said he didn't mean to offend anyone or to criticize Vinton. "Well, when you're Polish and live in Pittsburgh, you can do anything you want with the words," Buck said after Vinton's less-than-perfect singing at Tuesday's National League playoff between the Pirates and Cincinnati Reds. Buck's reference to Pittsburgh and Vinton's heritage rankled Lawrence R. Wujcikowski, president of the Polish Falcons of America, a national group based in Pittsburgh. "If he wanted to comment on Mr. Vinton's singing, then he should have done that," Wujcikowski said. "But he could have left being Polish and living in Pittsburgh out of it. Buck told radio station KDKA: "On the heels of the national anthem, I tried to pay a compliment to Bobby Vinton and it didn't come out right. "I was saying that if he messed it up, that's OK because everybody loves him. And he did mess it up, didn't he?" Vinton, who is from nearby Canonsburg, tripped several times over the words to the national anthem, and his cadence wandered from that of the Three Rivers Stadium organist. He said in a written statement Wednesday that he as an individual was at fault, not Poles as a group. According to Vinton, he was suffering from the flu at the time. "I messed up," Vinton's statement said. www.upi.com/Archives/1990/11/10/Hey-Bobby-Vinton-that-was-a-terrific-publicity-idea/4316658213200/

I miss old school baseball. Either you win the division or you don't go to the playoffs. I don't need 16 fucking playoff games on 16 different channels a night. That's too much baseball. The MLB acts like everyone likes these extra Wildcard games and interleague games. It's those baseball liberals who wanted these extra divisions. Most people want a true pennant race.
