Apparently, OMC issued a service bulletin in the early '90s about fixing engine that still did pop a lean sneeze AFTER proper carb cleaning and low speed needle adjustment. It called for "cheating" while synching that cam roller about 1/8 to 1/4 inch past the normal synching position (i.e.timing marks). Regards !

What is the factory setting for turning out the needle screw as a starting setting on these carbs. Is it 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 like the ones that have the needle in the front?
Hi, dumb newbie question. You mention using the primer to get it started; I grew up having been told that was a choke and had been pulling it out and holding it to get things started accordingly, rather than using it as a primer. It would explain why this isn't correct in retrospect. I looked for an owners manual on what the correct procedure is for using this as a primer, but I haven't been able to find any owners manuals online, only shop or service manuals. What should I know about how to use this as a primer? just give it a few pumps until it starts? I have a primer on the fuel line, and I know to pump that until it gets hard, but I just want to know what the correct operation is for this as well. Thanks again for the video and any insight you can give!

@Darkstar7950…. You got it right about 5 pumps of the primer should be enough. This type of primer is used in place of the older style butterfly choke. It produces a charge of fuel in the back of the carb.

Should the roller touch the timing plate when at idle? I adjusted my throttle and now the roller is not touching it…
@LivetofishOutboardRepair

Yes the roller should touch the plate. The plate is adjustable. There are two screws under the plate that have elongated holes for adjustment.

How did you get the freeze plug out? Also is the mixture screw after market?
@LivetofishOutboardRepair

Dustin Cribb …. I removed the “freeze plug” with a small drill bit and a pick and no the air mixture screw was OEM.

Just for the record, those plugs aren't freeze plugs, they are called welch plugs and just serve the purpose of giving access to carb inside passages for cleaning. One rarely need to get them off if your cleaning procedure includes soaking in chem-dip or in an ultra sonic cleaner., either is really the way to go. Carb kits include replacement welch plugs but I'd avoid messing with those and posssibly creating a leak. Regards !

I have the same engine but with only rope start. It won’t start unless I pump the primer. Any ideas?

Marcus Ingre …. This motor requires that you pump the primer before starting since it does not have a traditional style choke.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Alright, cheers. Then everything is in order and I don’t need to start troubleshooting. If I want to lean the carb, is the needlescrew on the side supposed to go in or out?
@LivetofishOutboardRepair

Marcus Ingre … turning the air/fuel mixture screw clockwise will lean out the carb. Conversely, turning it counterclockwise will enrich it.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepairfuel pump diaphram is most likely bad if you are running rich as the diaphragm leaks fuel straight into the cyclinder vs siphoning to the carb. That was my problem all these months even though the fuel pump looked great! You might as well replace all fuel lines and your primer bulb too while at it.

Just picked up a 25 hp 1993. Starving for fuel so will probably have to disassemble all these new parts I'm not used to with my last pull start 25 hp merc. I've had 4 surgeries on my left shoulder and one on my right...I'm done pulling any more cords!

Mathew Cooper…. I’m sorry to hear that about your shoulders. I hope you recover quickly and completely. You might want to look into an electric start. It shouldn’t take more then a couple of pulls to start it if everything is working as it should.
