Interesting to watch Murphy sucking up to Dean Bell at the end. The last time Murphy had anything to say about Bell on the BBC it was from the Wembley dugout in '89 when the camera caught him insensed about a head-high shot by Bell on one of Murphy's Saints players. The nation's viewers couldn't hear him but they could all lipread an expletive or two!

Even as a Saints fan, I like watching these old videos, even watching Wigan dominate. However, it does serve to reinforce just how unfair this era was though: the only team with all full-time players, with no salary cap and funds sufficient to buy any player they chose, and an exchange rate that meant it was feasible to bring in the best from Australia too. It's a wonder any team could come anywhere near them when you remember the context. I can't decide if it was a good thing (when I put away my Saints cap, it's a real pleasure to watch a team this good (even if they are Wiganers!), and I think the GB team benefitted at the time), or a bad thing (the domination they achieved was crippling for other teams, and does lessen their achievement somewhat when the odds were so highly stacked in their favor). Leeds domination was achieved on a much more level playing field, and to me is the more impressive period for that reason. What say you Wiganers?

Wigans' team was a roll call of World class players.

The era for me was fantastic-i was a similar age to the players on the field so I remember how hard rugby league was. Wigan success, I believe, was down to Maurice Lyndsay. The financial side of Wigan was masterful in this era, and Maurice was a huge part of that. Whilst I agree that the salary cap did somewhat level the playing field, I don't think we took the best decisions for the sport when we went to superleague. Crowd attendance was far better in that era. Even with salary cap our grand finals in the last 24 years have been dominated by only four teams! But change was needed in some form or other, so I'm probably being too nostalgic about our glory days. If you like this game try watching Wigan in the 1996 Middlesex 7's - the open play is wonderful to watch.

Greg Harding Yes, love watching the Middlesex games: hilarious to listen to the Union commentators! That said, it was a Pyrrhic victory, as we lost so many players to Union, after putting our best assets in the shop window. Also agree about the crowd sizes: this is the saddest part of our sport, that it isn’t played to the audience it deserves. Hope the league can recover after Covid. Many teams are already financially on their knees due to low crowds, but now the people we need in the stands will be the ones struggling financially themselves. Tough times ahead for everyone I think.

I grew up on rugby union, would have sold my soul to make it a career....then, in 1986, I discovered rugby league. A harder, faster and more exciting way to chuck a ball around. Took me five weeks to learn the rules, and loved every game. I just wish that league and union could get together for something annual maybe....like a seven's or nine's tournament, or another clash of the codes....wishful thinking maybe.....or perhaps invite two union teams to play one match at the magic weekend?

Greg Harding the Bath v Wigan games were great, but we’d be shooting our selves in the foot to do this again. We’re not financially strong enough, and we’d see a similar exodus. Losing Jason Robinson had a huge effect, not only because of how good he was, but how it opened the door to others. I don’t know how league expands, or why it’s not more appreciated, but I don’t think more integration with union will help. Negotiations will be: ok, let’s combine and call it something new: let’s take ‘rugby’ from your name, and ‘Union’ from ours! Our guys might just fall for it too!
