I'm from the US and I was in my 20's when the Transport was released. This is my favorite mini van of all time. In the day, it looked like someone took a sports car, a mini van, and a space ship and cross-breed them all together...so futuristically sporty...especially for a van. I worked for an agency with a fleet of Lumina vans (same vehicle) and truthfully, they weren't that great to drive. The windshield was so incredibly long, you felt like you were sitting in the middle of the van when driving it. The build quality was typical 90's GM...sloppy and rattly. Even with the short comings, I really love the Transport. Side note: Mr. Hub Nut, the correct US pronunciation of Lumina is LOOM-IN-a :)

Hi Ian, a few clarifications for you: 1) @5:35 the rear fan controls are at the second row passenger's seat on the left side, behind the driver. You wouldn't have been able to see them because of the baby seat. 2) @5:54 rear passenger head restraints were not required by US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards until 2010. Most manufacturers voluntarily provided them long before that though; second-generation U-body vans (1997-2005) had them. 3) @10:52 the transmission's shift ranges are Park-Reverse-Neutral-Overdrive-Drive-2-1. "Overdrive" (the symbol in the instrument cluster is a D encircled by an O) allows the transmission to shift between all four gears, whereas "Drive" locks out fourth gear. It wasn't until the mid- to late-1980s that 4-speed automatic transaxles with an overdrive gear became popular, and GM (and many others at the time) marked their 4-speeds' shift ranges this way. The torque converter will lock up in 3rd and 4th gear, no matter whether the transmission is in Drive or Overdrive. The base model Trans Sport (/Chevy Lumina APV) came with a 3.1 L V6 with a 3-speed automatic-no overdrive gear-and the shift ranges were simply P-R-N-D-2-1.

G'day, Ian! Pontiac intended, a production version of the Trans Sport was released for the '90 model year. Though not as radical as the original concept, it was still a leading-edge design-perhaps a bit too much for buyers at the time. Though it shared the same general shape as its predecessor and could certainly trace its roots to it, the production Trans Sport's proportions were quite different. It was significantly taller, and its wheels were not pushed out to the corners as much as those on the original concept van's. Still, it had some attractive innovations of its own, like a Fiero-inspired space-frame chassis, non-structural composite body panels, and seating for up to seven passengers. That first-generation of the Trans Sport was in production through the '96 model year. It never sold in the numbers that Pontiac had hoped, and when its much more conventional replacement arrived in 1997. Fortunately, the '86 Trans Sport has remained in excellent condition and is part of Pontiac's Historic Fleet. When GM returned to building true concept vehicles in the '80s, it decided these unique creations were significant pieces of its corporate history and the practice of destroying non-production-based show cars ended. This is why they are still displayed at events like the Eyes on Design Classic Car Show in Detroit and the Pontiac-Oakland Club International Conventions. Though it would be easy to dismiss the '86 Trans Sport as just another minivan, it is actually a significant vehicle to Pontiac, and for multiple reasons. First, it was a sign that the division was a much healthier company than it was just a few years before. Second, it showed that Pontiac designers and engineers had a lot of talent and innovation to bring to the table. Last, a version actually made it to production and lasted seven model years. All in all, it was a launch back into show business. Thank you! Cheers! 😊✌🏻🚐❤️ P.S. While Chrysler built its Voyager and Caravan around the space-efficient, front-drive K-car platform, Ford stuck with a rear-drive chassis for the Aerostar van. The decision ultimately proved less innovative and well-suited for a family van (as GM also found out with its Chevy Astro/GMC Safari), but Ford’s engineering and design efforts provided a conceptual template that eventually bridged the gap between traditional trucks and longroof wagons. That work helped the Blue Oval jump-start the SUV-hungry 1990s, kicking off a high-riding craze that has all but extinguished the once-proud minivan from suburban garages.

My parents owned the exact same vehicle. Identical except theirs was black. They were dog show enthusiasts and it was used to criss cross the American Midwestern states going to various dog shows. When they finally decided to sell it , with 265k miles, they sold it to their housekeepers brother for $385.00. He drove it from Madison Wisconsin to Juneau Alaska without issue. He used it as a hunting/fishing/camping vehicle for a few years . It finally met it's end on a icy road when it hit black ice and slammed into a guard rail. Pontiac was considered the "SPORTY" division of GM and their vehicles tended to handle better than those from the other divisions. You still see them today being used as daily transportation. The 3.8L V6 is a amazingly reliable/durable engine that easily goes 300k or beyond.

I had to send my 1990 Trans Sport to minivan heaven three years ago because of suspension rust issues - like the rear spring mounts half coming apart. It also had an unfindable AC refrigerant leak, windshield wipers that went nuts in hot weather, numerous hardware bits broken, and sound and water leaks because of aging shrinking door seals. I was sorry to see it go. It was significantly narrower, shorter and lighter than the current huge "mini"vans. But still I could move everything (not at the same time) in my apartment with it including a full sized sofa. A friend once said "oh I thought it was going to say NASA on the side." (ha ha).

Some information here. You can see it multiple times in the video but people were getting poked and jabbed by the top of the doors so there are bright yellow warning labels on the edgge telling you to watch out. That ceiling compartment with the button was a spot for you to put your garage opener remote so you wouldn't have to fumble with it. In america the brake lights and indicators are combined and the spot where the indicators are on this one are the reverse lights, and the lower lights in the rear are missing, also when third brake lights were mandated they were just slapped on over the boot release. The Oldsmobile version was the first minivan to ever get a power sliding door, and also in the Oldsmobile the seat right behind the driver folds out into a child seat.

Those 3800 V-6s’s are one of the best engines ever built, you can accelerate up too the speed limit, then back off on the accelerator and just let it pootle along at low revs and being very efficient. I had one in a Dodge intrepid, that unfortunately succumbed to the bane of those cars, a dodgy transmission.

This thing and a PT Cruiser. Two fine examples of the North American auto industry gone horribly wrong. I always chuckle at how the manufacturers try and make mini vans in any way cool. The GT and lets not forget the Sport edition. Love your channel and the variety. Thanks.

I found one 1992 Pontiac Trans Sport GT white only 175,000kms. Has the famous 6 cylinder 3.8 L 165-175 hp , 220-225 torque. Opel rear lights are cool 😎👌.

4:42 is the Garage Door opening remote storage. You would velcro your remote control into the compartment and could open your garage door by pressing the button on the outside which would pass through and hit the button on the actual remote.

Yes, on newer model on the driver's side of this console there is also a button to open electric sliding doors. There is a possibility that this console was added later by the owner and that's why the "computer" /compass doesn't work. Because it's not connected.

@@emjayay well, those bits were changing each year. There were also some new options in next years and so on. I don't remember for now if this console was standard on GT or not. Especially the 90-92 is a little bit different than 93-95 - there was small facelift and some things changed (for example brakes, ventilation panel and whole middle console etc.)

the structure of these things was started by Saturn, a division of GM. i dont believe it is still in use though in any gm cars. they did still rust out just not on the exterior panels! many north american cars and trucks still dont have amber turn signals in the back of the car many still use the same bulb/filament for turn signal and brake light. rear foglights are unheard of here as well considering the us invented the high mounted brake light, it's surprising that the rest of us lighting laws are still so archaic i think you should find one of our gargantuan pickup trucks and take it for a drive in wales, there should be a few roads wide enough!

Wow. That is one of the nicest examples of one of those vans I've ever seen. Here in the US, if you ever spot one, it's usually falling apart. Hell, even as a kid these things fell apart. Such a cool design though.

Button on roof console is garage door button. Before you could program your car to open you would Velcro it in a storage spot so it appeared as you had a built in button. The computer is a trip computer, tells you avg mpg, speed, compass, fuel consumption, miles/kilos to empty, as well as a trip eta timer.

My buddy had a loaded Olds Silhouette of around the same year and it was reliable mechanically,,, the drive train was very good, but everything else broke,, lol... And driving that thing around in the Houston Texas summertime was borderline,, that AC just barely had enough grunt to get it done....

95 Silhouette 3800 sport without those clunky seats and some cheap upgrades to allow the engine to breathe better. . Ooops I seem to have broken my traction control... Oh well fk it! Hit warp 9.6 in mine. Let off because it felt unsafe going over a hill mid turn I could feel it start to wobble as the wheels were so close to leaving the ground. Later hauled a load of computers down a winding road and it started snowing. Freezing. I was doing warp 6.0 and started sliding.. Released the throttle and corrected the steering, straightened out as a car passed but still felt the g-force pulling me into the other lane, and as soon as the car passed, turned again onward around the turn sliding again, this time into a nice drift to the straight. Later I built a bed in the back. I love that van. All purpose indeed!

I don't always like a video, but when I do, it's awesome.. You say it's the silhouette rebadged as a Pontiac? Then that's what mine was stock.. When I got it. 2nd owner. So proud! Then the upgrades.. The disappointment in the eyes of Honda drivers as they got smoked by a minivan😂 they were like...😳🙁

It's probably almost easier to find one of these pre-facelift TranSports in Europe than here in the states... I never see them for sale, and they filtered out of the used car market in less than 15 years... a lot of my friends hated them. Last one I saw for sale was almost a TranSport... Olds Silhoutte (The Cadillac of Minivans, according to "Get Shorty") about 10 years ago... but it was rough. I would adopt one of these into the family as a quirky cheap van, if I could find a reasonable one... I always thought it would be interesting to wedge either a hopped up supercharged 3.8 or the LS4 transverse V8 into one as a sleeper.
