0:00 The Dead Pool, the concluding film in the Dirty Harry series featuring Clint Eastwood, screened at 8pm on the evening of Wednesday 10 June 1992 on Sky Movies. This marked the fifth instalment in the series. Following this, at 9.30pm, Box Office America took over; it was a weekly countdown of the top 10 US films, introduced by Steve Marsh. The 1987 Hungarian film, A Hungarian Fairy Tale, followed at 10pm as part of Sky Movies' weekly Showcase International slot. It was a tale about young Andris, an orphan on a quest for his non-existent father, and Orban, a disheartened government clerk. Midnight Offerings, a 1981 TV horror film about a teenage witch (played by Melissa Sue Anderson) vying for her former boyfriend's attention with her powers, graced the screen at 11.40pm. This movie also starred Patrick Cassidy, Mary Beth McDonough, Marion Ross, Gordon Jump, Cathryn Damon and Dana Kimmell. Sky Movies closed down at approximately 1.11am. 0:15 June 1992 was an exciting time for Kiwi film buffs as Sky Movies screened five new movies for the very first time on television. Among these movies were The Hunt for Red October, Cry-Baby, My Blue Heaven, Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Tremors. The first movie to be screened was The Hunt for Red October on Sunday 7 June at 8pm. This thrilling movie is about a Soviet commander who steals his own submarine and attempts to defect by evading the Soviet navy and the Americans until he can convince the latter of his peaceful intentions. The movie stars Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin and was a box office hit when it was released in 1990. On Saturday 13 June at 8pm Sky Movies screened Cry-Baby, a 1950s teen musical about the romance between a renegade biker and a 'nice' young woman. This stylised movie stars Johnny Depp and was directed by John Waters. It is a fun and entertaining movie that is perfect for a Saturday night in. The third movie was My Blue Heaven, which screened the following night (Sunday 14 June) at 8pm. This comedy movie is about an inept, by-the-book FBI agent who is assigned to protect a wily gangster in the suburbs. The movie stars Steve Martin and Rick Moranis and is a hilarious take on the classic buddy cop genre. On Sunday 21 June at 8pm Sky Movies screened Gremlins 2: The New Batch. This horror comedy movie is about Gizmo, the cuddly creature from Gremlins, who falls into the clutches of a scientist and spawns hundreds of abominable monsters who take over New York City. The movie is a sequel to the popular Gremlins movie released in 1984. Finally, on Thursday, 25 June at 10pm, Sky Movies screened Tremors, a terrifying horror movie about a small desert town that is invaded by giant, slimy and predatory earthworms. The movie stars Kevin Bacon and is a thrilling ride from start to finish. From thrilling action movies to hilarious comedies and terrifying horrors, there was something for everyone... but only if you used to subscribe to Sky as Sky Movies was a subscription-based movie channel and broadcast on a scrambled UHF frequency!
