I've heard of the power steering pump bracket bending over time. That's how it was squealing for you and the washers fixed it. I had the same problem and also fixed it with washers.

I concur. We have 2 (almost identical) Jeep Cherokees- '91 Limited and a '94 Country and both have the same issue with that top bolt. I'll stop there, ugh.

Man I'm just saying this I don't respond on your on the main page you are not supposed to put them all the way in there's supposed to be a gap in behind there what you're supposed to do is take the longest length across your pulleys put the belt on there and simulate where is the true spot plum true whichever way you want to put it but running across the top rib of power steering and just the whole power steering go over to air conditioner alternator whatever is over there and then look and see if it's straight if it's off go in until you're straight if you go too far you need to put the tool in and remove it back off you had to press it all the way on it's not going to spin it's a press fit to deal I think with the key way too so hope this helps good day bud hope it's fixing your problem if you do what he did though got to say this you are not only your angle is not only off but it's also got a twisting upon now too so no reason for vibrations to happen through your belt off let her guys God bless

If you're just replacing the belt there's no reason to replace the pulley

I believe those pulleys can be pressed on too far, causing misalignment.

Do you happen to know the size of that large bolt that actually adjusts the tension? I have a 91 cherokee with the same set up but I'm missing that long bolt.

gotchya. I appreciate it. I didn't even know I was missing it til I started looking up videos on the right way to do this. lol I was trying to tighten it this morning after having replaced the water pump a while back. it would run without squeaking but would squeak if I turned the a.c. on unless the jeep was warmed up. now it just squeaks when running normally...

Having the same problem!!! Are you absolutely sure that you tighten all the bolts back down when you're done? I inherited a Jeep Cherokee with this problem and many of the bolts holding the power steering pump up were loose. Also mine does not stick out far enough as well similar to your situation. Did you feel like you were making a mistake by putting washers on the top bolt and not the bottom bolt down by the tensioner? This would seem to me an imbalance. Any response would be appreciated

David Behrendsen All the bolts should be tight. I had to use washers on the pivot bolt because for some reason the angle of the pulley/pump changed. I blew through two belts until I put the washers in. I don't know if your pump needs replaced or not but I would assume the loose bolts hindered it from operating properly. Hope I helped some 😀

Also, be sure and seat the new pulley properly. Misalignment in relation to the other pulleys will cause a loud screeching noise and a failed belt.

Steve Groff Jr - nice. I rebuilt a jeep head last summer, and now I have another jeep with belt and cooling issues. Quick question, the belt tension spec on these engines is super high and your belt looks like it doesn't come close to the 180 pounds (new) tension spec that the fsm's request. Is your belt in spec and if it isn't so you think it's a big deal?

Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I searched a drawer full of odds and ends bolts and washers and nuts till I found something that worked. The one I used could have been a wee bit longer as the nut could be on it a little better but it’s worked so far and it’s already been a few years. Thanks for asking.

Steve Groff Jr thanks Steve! I am going to replace mine today cause it seems a bit stripped. And I don’t even have a bolt where the power steering housing meets the pulley causing a lot of wobbling. Gonna have to do some trial and error

If this isn't too late you can take your both off take attention apart where your tensioner is and take it down to the parts place and have them see if they have a long threaded rod that is the specs that you need metric or standard have them cut that off fix it to where and get two nuts to screw onto that and if you have a welder or some JB weld no JB wool wouldn't work saving will find a friend or somebody you know that has a small welder and tack those two bolts together after you get a tight and there's your threaded rod I don't remember if it's metric or standard at least you're not having my problem mine the tensioner will not release the belt will not come undone it stays tight that sucks really

I just saw the ending of the video sorry I asked you to go back and take those washers out from the top part of your power steering mounting bracket that is not how it's supposed to be again no disrespect just saying I thought you knew but you aren't supposed to bear it completely you were supposed to get your belt and routed across the top where you have your walrus straight away and check your ankles make sure your angle is straight I'm just saying this you you really need to check this what's happened is your power steering pump is now off level and twisted at the same time dangerous game man wants you to be safe and want your stuff the last forever please listen to me
