Can you use the spin on lock ring with these tanks?
@DrShock
5 жыл бұрын
The Spectra model shown in the video, like the original GM style, is all steel not plastic so requires a snap ring style. I used a genuine GM part (ACdelco TR9) in the video, but the Spectra equivalent would be lock ring part LO91. The spin type is for plastic tanks.

I have an early model 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 5.7L gas. Am wanting to order fuel pump and have it in hand before starting to remove tank. Web sites are offering one (1) wire and two(2) wire pumps. How do I determine what one I have without dropping the tank? Your video was very informative, Thank you for taking the time to post it.
@DrShock

Yeah, I've seen this difference. You'll need to access the OG GM pump and find the three letter code stamped into it (or just check the harness connection). You'll see something like GFK (2 pin harness) or GFT (1 pin harness). There are several of these codes, these are just two examples. You can also swing by a GMC dealer, with your VIN, and have them tell you the GM part number for the pump module your truck was originally built with. That can be easier to cross reference for ordering beforehand.

@@DrShock Thank You for the GFK/GFT information. Do you have any suggestion short of remove the bed or remove the bed liner and cut a hole in the bed as to how I might go about grabbing the NUT that WAS spot welded in the rib but broke loose and now just spins around that the rear bolt screws into that holds the rear strap in place?
@DrShock

Well I wouldn't personally cut or modify the bed, I like to keep things perfectly stock. Can't say I've ever hit this particular problem before. But I'd more likely aim to just lift the bed access, rather than completely remove it. No less work fastener removal wise, but maybe a little less than a lift and shift off.

I have a 97 Chev 1 ton with a 454. I took it to a repair shop to have the tank and fuel pump replaced. When I got it back I immediately noticed that it was running rough, the truck was shaking, and the check engine light came on. I took it back and they said it’s an injector. I had the injectors replaced a year ago with ac delco injectors. They said the filter was plugged and something must have got through. I think the mechanic did something wrong because it was running fine before taking it there Any ideas what went wrong to cause the damage to the injector?
@DrShock
4 жыл бұрын
Really hard to say, as there's no specific code for the check engine light relating to a fuel injector itself (when one goes it can cause a number of symptoms). Any debris large enough to affect an injector would have been trapped between either the fuel module assemblies filtration sock or the inline fuel filter on the frame rail. So their analysis is probable, but I'd say only if you have not been keeping up with regular maintenance intervals on the fuel filter itself.

I would expect it to be very similar to this 1998 K2500. You might have some different clearance to work with (i.e., need jack stands) if you have a C2500 vs a K2500 though. There would be differences if you have the dual tanks feature too.

I presume you're asking about some type of chemical patch, rather than suggesting actual welding on a fuel container, even if empty. My opinion on the former is it would only be a temporary solution, perhaps if you were far away from home to get you back there kind. My opinion on the latter is that would not be worth the risk of injury, or even time and effort to reduce that risk, compared to the price of a brand new Spectra steel fuel tank.

Hi, I ran into a difficult issue I created for myself and need advice. I accidently sheared off the tip of the fpts that sits on top of the fuel pump while trying to remove it and now I need to replace that sensor. Since I only need enough access to get my hand on the top of the fuel pump, would you suggest lowering the tank or raising one side of the bed? If only lowering the tank a few inches , would I still need to disconnect the filler neck? Apologize in advance for the stupid girl questions but this is my first time dealing with any fuel tank related issues.
@DrShock
2 жыл бұрын
I would imagine you could go either way on the two approaches, but I tend to prefer leaving the bed alone (corroded fasteners an all that may present themselves). The thing about lowering the tank, is you have to have a jack or some improvised way to safely lower and raise it. Even for a few inches the filler tube will have to be removed, it's a pretty tight fitment there.

Sounds like you're setup may no longer be factory original then with only 4 inches there. I'm looking at a 1995 factory service manual for GMC & Chevrolet to check, and the illustrated procedure is the same as shown on the 1998. The only difference at a dealer of course would be they would have hoisted the truck up on the lift, rather than leave it on the ground, before dropping the tank.

my 97 sierra sl long bed was purchased used from an old man. He or maybe the prior owner before him swapped out the 34 gallon tank it should've come with and installed the 25 gallon tank used on short beds. I want to swap in the 34 gallon and want to know if I can reuse the current straps holding up the 25 gallon tank or do I need to purchase new ones?
@DrShock
3 жыл бұрын
As best I recall the REAR straps and bolts for both are common across pickup body tanks (both gas and diesel regular cab models used Front 15567776 & Rear 15567777 but extended cab used front 15611433) but the FRONT varied if they are the OEM GM ones, so as long as neither the bolts or straps are damaged or suffering from excessive corrosion that would weaken them you could reuse them. If you end up tossing one for these damage though, best practice would be to just get new all the way around for safety. A good place to double check parts is rockauto.com, you can see a number of different strap vendors in one view and make sure beforehand.

You wouldn't have any pressure to speak of for a vehicle that's been sitting for years. But you would want to clean out / flush that tank of the old fuel as it's very likely varnished up.

@DrShock

I do this rarely enough not to recommend a specific brand, but your local NAPA or Autozone will have fuel tank cleaner kits or just the cleaning solution as well. My approach is to inspect for rust first, especially under the insulation strips GM glues onto the top tank areas. While some folks will attempt to repair these with epoxy, that's temporary at best. I will scrap any tank with deep corrosion and replace with a new one. If you get past the rust check on the outside, time to do it on the inside. If you get past that check, then you can invest the time and money to clean it out with a chemical product. I would only suggest the tank cleaning since you said it's been sitting for _years_ . I personally would not bother to do this on a tank from a running vehicle, unless it was a special problem like water in the tank or with diesel having microbes in there from water intrusion.

What side does the high pressure line go on the tank
@DrShock
3 жыл бұрын
The line along the frame rail to the fuel filter will be the outlet from the fuel pump module, the pressure line. At the top of the sender, it will be the larger diameter pipe. I may be recollecting this a bit off, but pre-1997 I seem to recall 3/8" for outlet pressure and 5/16" for the inlet return line. With the vent being the smallest. For 1997+ the quick connects only fit one way, so you can't go wrong. Hope that helps.

You don't have to lift the bed to swap out the tank, but if its out of the way it makes the replacement procedure a little easier (the hard part of this job imo is dropping and raising the tank itself with the vehicle not on a lift). If you were already planning to do it, I'd say pull the bed, replace the tank, then install your replacement bed.
