Best racing class ever! And I probably also think 1994 was best year is in terms of the cars' appearance. Partly because if you wanted to compete with spoilers and wings, you had to build 2,500 such homologation cars as well. I'm surprised that the commentator only talks about reduced weight on the BMW at 25:40 and 28:24 when everyone can see that Alfa (and Audi in german series STW) from now on were not alone with a wing package. Something that immediately got up BMW's speed on the tracks - and the nice 318is / 4 Class II in the colours red, yellow, blue and black out on the streets! Which no one remembers, I guess? But I looked for one in Germany and took it home to Sweden 2007. Not so quick with only 140 hp but with very good balance in corners and fun to drive I remember. Already 1995, the FIA decided that everyone was allowed to have (within certain given dimensions) a front and rear spoiler on the race car without any connection to the street cars.

@paulpearson3744

@@davegiles2610 yes 2000 is cool but only bad point is the lack of Nissan, Volvo and Peugeot works entries and that class b (similar to group n in rallying) production style cars like pug 306 and plain Honda accord. The pit stops for the works teams in 2000 were amazing compared to 98 and 99. I think they had it down to about 3.9 seconds. I didn't like 2001 even though Steve soper made a comeback in the 406 coupe. it was basically vauxhall vs Vauxhall. The cars and big boy manufacturers budgets were and are long gone. 2001 felt like a backward step

@@paulpearson3744 The pit stop times were amazing weren't they. Funnily enough, I've watched a few 2000 races on here recently. There only seem to be the Thruxton Highlights on here from 99, but there are a few more sets of Grandstand highlights on the Daily Motion site, which could be worth a look. I agree 2001 was a bit of a backward step, although it was a transitional year and things did improve (with field sizes etc). Still crazy to think 2001 was the last year to feature in a Video Game (Toca Race Driver). Cox and Watson were brilliant, as you say in your other comment. A bit like Cox and Parrish, they bounced off each other well didn't they. Murray was great though, as we're the old highlights🙂

As soon as they could get the parts homologated they did. I can remember the bmws sprouted m3 kits very quickly. Audi were worse then alfa. They shipped the race parts in the boot of the homologation model of 80 in german with a note saying they can't be used for road use because they weren't tuv approved. There's also picture on a mondeo testing with stock spoiler mounted about a foot on the boot lid! In reality the spoilers on the alfas was a diversion. They had a trick differential which gave them more traction. Other teams were underdeveloped in this area.
