The body design of those new Camrys are pretty sweet. I have an '01 IS300 with 136,000 miles and an '04 Camry LE V6 with 200,000 miles, both are very reliable. If I could afford an LC500 or IS500 F Sport I would buy one lol. I also love these old LS400s, the 1UZFE is a great engine, the only thing I worry about is the power steering pump, however.

Rear inner tail lights are different too. The inner lights on the 98 are longer than 95. Note the 98 tails go fartger past the emblems than the 95 by 1 or 2 inches. Besides the crystal look of the 98, they are also longer/wider than 95.

Wish I could compare my 93 LS400. It's in pristine condition, and it's got the LARGE head lights and tail lights, which I just LOVE! Mine also has the projected dash indicators that give it that 3D look to the dash, and mine doesn't say "LS400" on it anywhere.

Engine and gear changes are probably one of the most important changes when thinking about LS400 for daytime use. Engine from standar V8 to VVTi, and automatic from 4 to 5 gears. I don't know if any of you have experience on how much lower consumption is on the new VVTi, versus the old V8? The old V8 is NON-interfering, the new VVTi engine can't withstand timing belt snap.
@Roddy_Zeh
Жыл бұрын
I read that only the '90-94 engines are non-interfering, that the '95-97 ones already are. Even read report of an owner testing it while his sister's car was changing timing belts. They rotated the cam sprockets by hand and, yep, a valve smooched a piston. Rotated it the other way, same story.
@bildillamagasin
Жыл бұрын
@@Roddy_Zeh Whoops, that was new info. Info I had received earlier said it was the same engine up to VVTi. But maybe they changed the compression on the 95 models? Higher compression probably means a smaller chamber and less space for the valves.

The second gen redesign 1995 to 1997 were my favorite. When the facelift happened in 1998, although still beautiful, the LS400 lost some of its original character. The 1998 to 2001s were more popular but I still prefer the earlier years.

Both nice cars. I used to have a 91 Lexus 400 LS. It was one of the nicest cars I've ever owned. I went to a Lexus dealership on Sunday because no one there to hound me and that's when I first saw the 400 LS. I got an Auto Trader and found a beautiful white and gray one. This thing had all the bell's and whistles. It had a TV screen I guess where the old stereo used to be. It was replaced with a Bose system and a 12 disc changer in in the glove box and a DVD player in the trunk. It came with 20' tires and solid dish chrome wheels and also the original wheels and tires. The windows were all black tinted, which is illegal where I live. It had a sun roof. The only thing I ever bought for it, was a Sony Playstation in the backseat for my Son. I'm seriously considering buying another one. Thanks for showing me your beautiful cars!!

I own a 2000 Silver two tone LS400 and my Mother has a champagne 1993 LS that I drive and look after as well. The 2nd gen is definitely faster in stock form, with a slightly nicer interior. The 1st gen definitely feels more solid in its build quality, and the engine builds power in a more linear way without the vvti. They are both absolutely fantastic cars and a pleasure to drive every time. Would love to have an SC400 someday too. Peace to Lexus lovers worldwide from Canada. the air suspension is supposed to be far more comfortable, but the problem is that it is much more expensive when it needs to be repaired. most people swap it to a normal spring suspension when the air suspension needs fixing, not sure if i would, the comfort might be worth it if it was possible to repair it.

My headlights are glass on my 1997 LS400. Much higher index of transmission. Polycarbonate becomes dim after ultraviolet from sun, but can be buffed-out with special cleaner. In 71 years of driving, I've only cracked a glass headlamp lens once, hitting a moose a glancing blow while motoring at 35 mpg in Norway with my wife in a VW Golf (Rabbit in US), back in 1976. So I'm not worried about having to replace my 1997's lamp lens.

Dear E28 Source, I enjoy listening to your recordings on You Tube about old Lexuses. I hope you can help me. I bought a new 1996 Lexus LS400 27 years ago. It now has 221K miles on it. Last year it started running rough in Florida, and I also saw smoke coming from both exhausts. I told my mechanic to do a complete tune-up, (plugs, wires distributor caps, rotors, etc.) Still ran rough and smoke from exhausts. He replaced the 3 catalytic converters, but no help. He replaced the 3 oxygen sensors, but no help. He examined both mufflers all okay, but no help. I finally shipped the car to my mechanic in Massachusetts. We removed the top intake manifold, examined the fuel rail, inspected the 8 fuel injectors and replaced the 8 rubber seals, and performed a compression test. Still no help. We disconnected the power steering line to the engine, still no help. I read that if the engine oil was overfilled, the oil would foam and smoke, and not lubricate. (Lucas oil was added last time), so we drained and replaced the oil. Still no help. I love this car and do not want to abandon it. Any suggestions?
