@@sd097 I agree with Fats, forget teams like Adelaide and Perth. Fact is, all Sydney clubs that went Super League survived and have gone on to win a comp in the NRL era. Clubs like Cronulla and Penrith weren't exactly in great shape in the 90s

Only a few Sydney based sides had the option of joining Super League. Norths were one of the sides that had the option to jump ship, but they opted to stay put, and as a result, they paid the ultimate price in their exclusion from the comp at the end of 1999 season. Joining Super League however wouldn't have guaranteed them of survival, but it certainly would have helped.

@@stupendous1068 Did you forget John Ribot played for Manly, only team he supported during Super League era. North Sydney new they’d be doomed in existence if they joined that insult called Super League. John Ribot & Arthur Athurson would’ve destroyed the North Sydney Bears, to ensure the survival of Sea Eagles. Bears are and will be deserving of 18th licence.

Norths had the option to join Super League, but they decided to stay put, and as a result, they ended up paying the ultimate price in their exclusion from the comp at the end of the 1999 season. Balmain and Wests, in contrast, never had the option to jump ship, because the whole Super League concept was to take the game to the World, which meant having as few Sydney teams as possible in their competition. Had Newtown still been in the comp then, they would have faced the same fate Balmain and Wests did.

Norths had their best chance to win another comp during the 90s with the side that they had; Fairleigh, Florimo, Larson, Moore, Roy, Seers, Soden, Taylor, Toole, Wilson, etc. And also with Steve Martin and Peter Louis at the helm as coach. Was never a Norths fan, but they did play some good footy. I also miss the red pre '91 kit they used to play in. I didn't like it when they decided to change to their playing kit from all red to the red, white, and black kit they played in from 1992 onwards.

North Sydney almost made it into the 97 Grand Final instead of Newcastle. Newcastle won the premiership and along with the SL premiers Brisbane, as well as the Auckland Warriors, were guaranteed entry to the 14 team NRL in 2000. If Norths had won the league in 1997 they'd have had a free pass and likely have been a Central Coast based side for the last 2 decades. Manly-Warringah, as runners-up, were granted no such protection and eventually merged with Norths. If Manly had won in 97 they would have had a free pass instead. Newcastle would have kept their team in any competition, Brisbane were never in danger and Auckland were broke but protected. Heck, if Balmain, Wests, St George, Illawarra, Souths or any of the Sydney clubs had won in 97, they'd have been guaranteed another 25 seasons based on what we've seen. The Super League war hasn't actually ended. Ask any Magpie or Bear.

Rationalization was going to happen one way or another. A 20 team competition was never gonna work in the first place. Norths' best chance of survival would have been joining Super League, as the 3 Sydney based Super League sides (Bulldogs, Cronulla, and Penrith) all survived rationalization. Norths had the option to jump ship, but ultimately decided to stay put. As for Balmain and Wests, Super League was never an option for them, as the whole Super League concept was to take the game to the World, which meant having mostly non-Sydney based teams in their comp, and having both teams in their comp was never going to fulfill their demands, as they were both long established Sydney based clubs. In addition, both clubs were in a similar financial situation that Newtown were in during the late 70s and early 80s, which meant it was no longer viable to keep them in the comp, so they were subsequently given the ass.

I have an answer to the too many clubs in Sydney crowd. This is still applicable today by telling the current clubs, your area & mascot only exists because of the foundation clubs of Sydney that created the current game. So this is how it works. All teams will revert back to 1908 boundaries. So Western Suburbs Magpies, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, North Sydney Bears, Balmain Tigers & Re-introduction of Newtown Jets to take over Bulldogs & St George area. The rest will be demoted to 2nd Division. The other argument is merge all Foundation clubs above into one super club. THE FOUNDATION CLUBS OF RUGBY LEAGUE. No mascot but the uniting of all foundation clubs colours on the jersey and area with mascot. Then you’ll end this too many Sydney Teams in competition argument in 1/2 a second.

North Sydney & Balmain should’ve merged, both Foundation clubs. Both teams would’ve set up a joint merger and made a jersey to incorporate that. The Tiger & Bear will share equal status.

No Sydney SL club was ever in danger of merging or extinction. Bears had a better chance with SL.
