In 1996 Daniel S Dunnam and Alan Hatchett (founders and co-presidents of The Wompedy Club) decided to document their high school: Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, TX. During their junior year they interviewed about 100 of the schools 700 student body and staff and attended damn near every performance, opening, and recital the school had - always with the cameras rolling.
Forty-four hours of footage later, it was summer. They spent the three months logging, scripting, and editing a 21 minute documentary short about the school. On August 30th, 1996, the school re-arranged the schedule of the day to allow two screenings of the Wompedy Documentary of Arts Magnet so the whole student body could see it. Making the event more special, August 30th was declared "Wompedy Day" by the mayor Dallas and the entire student and faculty were given newspaper hats with Wompedy Club logos on them - because, what's more wompedy than newspaper hats?
And yes, that's the one and only Norah Jones in there. 20 years later, I still love her high school version of "Beginning To See The Light" featured within.
