My 10th birthday was the day after Game 7, Oct. 18. While my parents were giving me birthday wishes at the breakfast table before school, all I could do was watch these same highlights and say to myself, "How could the Cardinals let this happen?"

While Joe Torre is anticipating his first World Series appearance, the NLCS pitted the defending champs against the upset-minded--Braves vs. Cardinals. Game 1 in Atlanta, and it was tied at 2-2 in the 8th inning. There, with the bases loaded in the bottom half, Javy Lopez singled home a pair to put Atlanta ahead to stay, 4-2. With Greg Maddux pitching in Game 2, the Braves expected to leave Atlanta two games up. But a funny thing happened in the 7th. The Cardinals broke a 3-3 tie with five runs, capped by a Gary Gaetti grand slam. The Cards won, 8-3 and headed to the Gateway Arch with a split. At Busch Stadium for Game 3, Ron Gant put a hurt against his former club, by hitting two clouts off Tom Glavine. All the runs St. Louis would need in a 3-2 win. Come Game 4, the Braves seemed ready to even the series with a 3-0 lead in the 7th. But a two-run triple by Dmitri Young and an infield hit evened the score. One inning later, the Braves were burned by Jordan--Brian, that is. Brian's 8th inning screamer landed over the LF wall for a home run. Three Eckersley outs later, the Cards won, 4-3, to go up three games to one. One more win and the Cardinals will pull off an amazing upset. The Cardinals' fans were ready to send the Braves packing as Game 5 approached, but Atlanta fired hit after hit and run after run. Five runs in the first, two more in the 2nd, and the Braves cruised in a 14-0 rout behind John Smoltz. Back in Atlanta for Game 6, Greg Maddux held the Cardinals scoreless through 7 innings, and the Braves went on to win, 3-1, to force a deciding game. Game 7 was over very early. Tom Glavine's line drive to left eluded Ron Gant in the first, leading to three runs scoring, capping a 6-run first. Atlanta went on from there, as Lopez, Andruw Jones and McGriff went deep, and they walloped the Cards, 15-0. In the final three games of the series, Atlanta outscored the Cardinals, 32-1. Here comes Atlanta, New York.

Think of the storylines had that happened; Joe Torre in his 1st World Series managing vs the team that fired him the previous year; the Stottlemyre family on opposite sides. A classic Yankees-Cardinals Fall Classic. But it wasn't meant to be. What a brutal defeat at the hands of the Braves who manhandled the Cards in those last 3 games tho.

Every game but 5 and 7 were close games going into the later innings. Not sure if larussa could have butned alicea as the guys on base were kind of slow. Not much the Cards could have done better in game 6....benes did his job but they couldn't score. Gaetti said at the end of the series that the better team won. It was still a tremendous season for the Cardinals ant the start of a promising new ownership group.

Rematch of the 1982 NLCS Smoltz, Maddux, and Glavine are just studs. Nothing that can be done 1:36 Why in the world did LaRussa not order a bunt in that game 1, top 7th inning against Smoltz in a tie game??!! 4:45 Gaetti grand slam off Maddux 5:10 Oh man, that was scary with the Cards owners wife. 5:34 I cannot believe just how close fans and security guards were to the action. It is so dangerous with foul balls and flying bats nearby. 5:57 Ron Gants second home run of the game, off Glavine again 6:31 Clutch strikeout by the Cardinals reliever 8:30 Another clutch home run for Brian Jordan (he hit one against the Padres Hoffman in game 3 of the Division Series)

I remember there was some bad blood resulting from this series for a couple of years between Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox because Cox afterwards said something to the effect of if they had played the way they were capable all series they should have finished it in 4 or 5 instead of going the full 7. La Russa took that as a slight against his team and let people know about it the next season.
