Having dipped his toe in Belgian waters in 1994 and 1995, Liam O’Callaghan returned in 1996 to tackle the premier event in the country, the Ypres 24 Hours Rally. O’Callaghan was to retire early on with transmission issues but up front a young Belgian by the name of Freddy Loix was blazing a trail, leading such luminaries as Armin Schwarz and Patrick Snijers. Loix was fastest on all but 4 of the 39 stages to win by almost 3 minutes to take his first of 11 wins on the event.
